Let's see how well you know your Bible (or how fast you can look something up).

Multiple Choice: From what country did Solomon get cedar and cypress logs to build the temple? (a) Syria; (b) Assyria; or (c) Lebanon.

P.S. I think I heard this one on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.

Ha! Well I have a sleeping baby in my lap so I'm not going to look it up, but I'll go with "the cedars of Lebanon," Regis. (Is that his show, or is it that show that's even worse?) Christie

You are exactly right. They are called the cedars of Lebanon.

Mr Willet,

You're going to have to get busy. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Only 8 posts. How are you going to be the next Charter Member at that rate?

Here is your smilie until you get busy: {anon}

You must have a life outside of computers, don't you? Shame. Shame. Shame.

I learned a long time ago that the quality of a post is more important than the number of posts one has. Besides, I spend most of my time at other boards. On average I write 20 posts per day.

How old was David when he first began to reign over Judah?

A) 25

B) 30

C) 40

D) 35

In_His_Shadow

I will venture a guess of 30 years. I get this from his being born in the year 1040 and officially took the reign over Judah in the year 1010. Though he actually was appointed king by Samuel in secret when he was much younger. Saul continued to be king until his death.

These are getting increasing harder. At first I knew the answers know I'm having to study to find them. Good job on the questions.

When I get it right it kind of feels like when you get first place in a race and when someone ask you have many were in the race and you have to say only 1 :)

I may hang and see if someone else wants to answer first. I'm not too good at the other games the girls on here are playing.

I did know the answer to the first one...a follower of christ is not to judge anyone on ANYTHING....that's god's job.

jamesglewisf
11-04-2000, 09:04 AM
Actually Debby, that's not exactly true. Jesus said to take the log out of your eye so that you could see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye. It is the attitude that matters. What we don't judge is someone's heart. That is God's job.

You have to judge someone's behavior in order to decide how to help them, for instance:

James 5:19-20
19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back,
20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins.

Matthew 18:15-17
15 "And if your brother sins, go and reprove him in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
16 "But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.
17 "And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax-gatherer.

Debby

This is very true, thank you for correcting me, judging someones actions and judging their heart are two different things...but I think we have to be very careful in our judgements, since we really don't know thier hearts or the reason behind some of their actions. Sometimes it can do more damage that good.

This is the first time for me to participate in a forum.
I am not an American, but an Israeli, so I beg your pardon for any mistakes.
After reading the posts I can say well done! I think many of you know Hebrew quite well...
I would like to challenge you with some questions:
What is the meaning of armageddon? bedlam?

blinc
12-14-2000, 06:09 PM
Well, I'll give my guesses.

Armageddon. The end of times, when Satan is loosed upon the earth?

Bedlam. When people are out of control and chaos rules?

Alpha

Very good.
These two are also related to places in Israel.
Do you know what places and what is the connection?

Genesis 38:27-30
27 And it came about at the time she was giving birth, that behold, there were twins in her womb.
28 Moreover, it took place while she was giving birth, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet {thread} on his hand, saying, "This one came out first."
29 But it came about as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out. Then she said, "What a breach you have made for yourself!" So he was named Perez.
30 And afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand; and he was named Zerah.

Jim, that is impressive.
One of the descendants of Zerah committed a crime and was mentioned with all his family line from him to Zerah.
Who was the descendant and what was his crime?

When Isreal under Joshua's command destroyed Jericho, they were banned from taking anything or anybody out of Jericho other than Rahab and her family.

Achan took a mantle from Shinar, 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold 50 shekels in weight.

You can read about it in Joshua chapters 6 and 7.

This probably dosen't fit in here, and it might even be in here and I missed it. But, a friend of mine sent this to me a while back. Had to share it.

"Did You Know"

1) Psalms 118 is the middle chapter of the entire Bible?

2) Before Psalms 118, Psalms 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible?

3) After Psalms 118, Psalms 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible?

4) That there are 594 chapters each before and following Psalms 118?

5) That if you add up all the chapters except Psalms 118, you get a total of 1188 chapters.

6) And incidentally, 1188 or Psalms 118 verse 8 also happens to be the middle verse of the entire Bible.

The central verse should have a fairly important message don't you think?

"It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man."

Jim you surly know the bible!
Indeed Achan is the name, mentioned as Achan son of Karmi (something like vineyard man in Hebrew) son of Zaity (something like olive man in Hebrew) son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah.
By the way, Achan is also a kind of poisonous snake that can be found in that region. I guess that there is no connection between them, but still this is interesting (both are "bad").
I don't know if my spelling of the names is right, I wrote them app. as they sound in Hebrew.

Great post Lisa, and this is the perfect place for it.

Thanks for the compliment Alpha. On December 31, my wife and I will have read the Bible all the way through for the 9th. We use that One Year Bible. I also used to teach Bible classes. This means that I have a general idea about almost all of the stories in the Bible. I also have a really good concordance for finding the stories.

What about Lisa's "Did you know" thing. Does anyone know for sure if it is right or not?? I'd like to hear from you. I wondered about it when I saw it at a different forum.

jamesglewisf
12-20-2000, 02:25 PM
I hate to be a party pooper, but I counted all the chapters and came to something else.

Psalm 118 is not the middle chapter. Psalms has 150 chapters. 117 chapters before Psalm 118, and 32 after it.

Genesis - Job is 478 chapters. If you add 117 to that, you get 595.

Proverbs - Revelation is 561 chapters. If you add 32 to that, you get 593.

So, Psalm 117 is actually the middle chapter of the Bible. That would be 478+116=594 and 561+33=594. Thus, 117 is the middle.

Everything else appears true. The only one I'm not sure of is the Psalm 118:8 being the middle.

I guess I cheated to get the answer though. Sorry. :( I took a class called "The Old Testament as Literature" in college. I didn't really know many names and details of the Old Testament "groupings" I guess until then. Now I can't remember them! I grew up in church, but we didn't study that stuff.
