One of the problems I've always had with mice is the that the works get gummed up with dust, lint, hair, etc. I eliminated that problem about six months ago when I got one of the Microsoft IntelliEye optical mice. You can use it on top of any flat surface. Macintosh and Windows versions are available, and they even have one that leftie's can use. Besides, they're pretty cool looking with the red glow that emits from underneath. People often gawk at it.

What's your favorite mouse or pointing device?

I love the "Razor," it is a really cool mouse that is fast and precise, which for a gamer is really good! :D
I has four buttons and a wheel all programable. When we got ours it was $70, not too bad...I'ld buy another in a minute.

I really don't know what the name of ours is... we ordered it when we got our HP Pavillion several months ago. It's a scroll mouse I believe... has two clickers and a wheel right in the middle.

Has anyone heard of a mouse/pad thing that is supposed to be a flat square with a glass top on it? You're supposed to just be able to place your hand on the glass and it reacts to your hand movements... has anyone else heard of that? Or has someone been pulling my leg you think? It sounds like something from Star Trek! :)

Like a touch-pad blinc?
I've heard of those before, actually used one quite a bit. The lap-top that was here in my house had one on it...I disliked it mucho! You'ld be typing and accidently hit the pad and you'ld end up typing off in no-mans'-land...erg!

Hi all,

If I can avoid it I won't use a mouse at all. At home I use a trackball made Logitech (easier on the wrist), if not that I will usually try to use keyboard shortcuts (much faster). Well, just thought I'd put in my two cents worth

TTP, I'm not positive what they are called, but that has a similar ring to it. Did you just use your hand on a screen? Errg, that would be irritating if you accidentally put your hand on it... I hadn't thought of that possiblity.

Unseen1 - I've never actually saw a trackball. Does it have clicker things? How does it work?

Hi blinc,

A trackball has all the same buttons as a mouse. The difference is that instead of the ball being below, the ball is on the top somewhere. Mine is right where your thumb is when u are working your mouse. Much easier to navigate with this thing.

I'm with TTP, the Razor mouse is the fastest there is. One of my roomates has the new Microsoft Optical mouse, to me its no faster than a regular mouse and it jumps to far. So its harder to put the pointer in the precise place that I want it. In gaming I've never seen anything like the Razor. You can change the speed of the mouse on the fly, even in a game. It runs at 1000 dpi, there is a more expensive one that runs at 2000 dpi, a regular mouse does about 35. Like Unseen1 I would rather use keyboard shortcuts, but in Quake you MUST use a mouse.

Hey Unseen1 thank you for the info. :) I didn't know they made one with a roller ball thing other then one on the bottom. I've got to get to a computer store and check all of these new mouses... mice(?) out!

We had to get a new mouse about a week ago, so decided to try the one you mentioned above James... the IntelliEye optical. It's great!! We love it! The only problem was that we have a HP USB port keyboard that our old HP mouse would plug into. With the Intellieye it isn't compatible with the keyboard ports, so we had to plug it into the back of the computer, which means undoing the scanner. Need to get a mulit-port thingy for the computer.

However, the mouse is cool! Love it! Yeah, that red glow, especially when you're typing late at night is pretty cool... point it at my feet every now and then for grins and giggles. (ok, yep - I'm easily amused). ;)

I wanted the Microsoft IntelliEye optical mouse but hubby wanted the Microsoft Optical trackball. It's alright, but I wanted the other one. {bawling}

We have the MS Intellimouse and it's great. We now got the Genius optical mouse (about half the price) and it's also good (and has the cool red light {cool})

We have had some compatibility problems with the Genius mouse and Windows Millenium but we switched the mice between two comps (both on Millenium) and things got sorted out.

For 3.5 years I have been using Logitech Cordless MouseMan. It’s like using a cordless phone: using a corded one is still OK, but you do not want to. But I use the keyboard shortcuts whenever I can remember them ;).

Nudnik, on the cordless mouse... do you have to have the mouse in any particular place (like in alignment with the computer) for it to work? I've been wondering how those things work and would aprpeciate any info. you could give me on the up's and down's of a cordless.

Blinc, there are no downs. The only thing is the expense: it was $75, then $65 (~2 years ago), now - ? It uses 2 AAA batteries, they last several months (I do not remember when I changed mine last time). There is a small (smaller than the mouse) receptor, which is plugged to the back of the computer. The mouse and the R. should be within 6’. It’s RF, so direct view is not a must.
As I said, a corded mouse is not a big inconvenience, but a cordless one is so much better!
Mine is Logitech. It’s a great company. Once my pointer began to “stumble”, like there were an invisible (horizontal) line on the screen. After 15’ on the phone, the tech gave me the MRA# and even did not ask for a receipt or a date of purchase! I got a brand new mouse (in a wrapper!) in two weeks!

Thanks for the info Nudnik! :) I'm glad to know that the cordless mouse isn't a picky piece of equipment. Next time we get one, I think we'll go cordless if possible - our dogs are forever getting hung up in the cord... snatching the mouse off the desk when they walk by, or get to wagging there tails around the desk - *swish* *swish* Aaaagh! *climbs under desk to grab mouse* {toothy}

Is RF - Radio Frequency?

Thanks again for the info Nudnik! :)

Yes.
Cordless mouse is not teethered, but still cannot flee a dog ;).

Flea collars have to be purchased separately.

My favorite mouse is definitely Mickey.

Definitely.

Beyond that, I've used just about everything -- from $5 cheapo mice to $60 Logitech trackballs. I tend to like trackballs more than mice. I have this fear of carpal tunnel syndrome and I get a lovely pain shooting up the top of my hand/wrist with too much regular mouse usage.

I try to memorize keyboard shortcuts whenever I can and have always been a keyboard-oriented person. (Then again, I got my first computer before people were using mice, so that might have something to do with it.)

We're currently using a regular Microsoft mouse. It's all right, but I do like the trackball. There is a slight re-learning curve when you switch from a mouse to a trackball, but it seems easier on the muscles.

Plus (and this was a big one in some spots I've had my computer), the trackball doesn't need space to move around in. It only needs the space it sits on, since you move the ball around on top but don't need to scoot the whole unit around to get it to move. (In other words, your finger[s] act as the mouse pad to rub against the ball and move it.)

I tried cheaper trackballs, and those were disasters. If you're going to go trackball, spring for a good one. Logitech is the only brand I've used that works for a long time and doesn't start skipping funny.

With regular mice, you can get away with cheapie ones if you're in a financial pinch, and they'll last you till you can save up for something better.

Nudnik> Flea collars dont worry me as I wear a gas mask. :D

I have been useing an internet mouse for a few months now, no more reaching for the scroll bars. I am so dependant on it now I dont think I could back to the straight mouse again. I wanted to buy a cordless mouse but the salesperson
talked me out of it. Maybe they work better by now.

The track ball sounds good to me as my mouses rollers keep clogging up.

I like the Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer. It has a great shape, and I like losing the tether.

No way - my husband would "put it somewhere safe" or the kids would "borrow it but I put it back, honest" and I'd be stuck with just a keyboard!

I like my new optical mouse - first time I've used one. But I can't find a normal mousemat that works, although the ones at my local library work OK. I like the scroll wheel.

You need one that isn't shiny. There are some that kind of have a rubber bottom and fabric top. They seem to work well.

You can strangle people with my mouse!!! Muahaha

I dislike most cordless things, they dont work well generally.....

I have a Microsoft Lazer mouse and it seems alright,i dunno.... (Sometimes it skips which i dont like (Doesnt move as freely as it should (Maybe its the pad i dunno)))
