Discipleship is not just a book or a program, it is a way of life. To make a disciple includes evangelism, baptism, and training. Jesus said to "go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you."
So what, you ask, is a disciple. A disciple is a follower of Christ. Pretty simple.
I thought I would list some useful materials to assist in discipleship, but remember, discipleship is not just going through a book with someone; it is sharing your life with them. I have used all of these materials.
Evangelism Explosion by James Kennedy is an excellent training program. It teaches you through class time and hands-on training how to effectively share your faith in a non-confrontational manner.
Growing Strong in God's Family is part of the 2:7 Series from Navigators. It is an excellent small group study on how to live a balanced Christian life. We'll talk more about it in other threads.
A Handbook for Christian Maturity by Bill Bright of Campus Crusade for Christ is an excellent book. It has 10 basic steps toward Christian Maturity.
Life Builders is another excellent discipleship program from Campus Crusade. It is headed up by Ron Proctor of Grand Prairie (Dallas suburb), Texas; but it is quickly spreading across the nation. The thread that runs throughout Life Builders is how to live by faith.
The Timothy Principle by Roy Robertson of the Navigators. Who is Roy Robertson you ask? Well, he is just the person who created both the Bridge Illustration and the Hand Illustration, two of the most widely used discipleship illustrations in use. This book is hard to find. If you can't get it, just send me an email.
The Lost Art of Disciple Making by Leroy Eims of Navigators is another excellent discipleship resource.
That's a start. What's on your list?
