View Full Version : ICQ
ICQ (I-seek-you) is supposed to be very popular, yet I know very few people who actually use it.
Do you have ICQ's? Do you like them?

It's funny, instant messaging is kind of a crowd thing. I know many people who use ICQ exclusively and many who use AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) exclusively. I use both so that I can chat with both groups.
ICQ has a lot more features than AIM. It automatically stores history, which is a feature I like very much.
I would get whichever one most of your friends have. If that criteria doesn't help you make a decision and you only want one, get AIM. It has a lot more users. I like having both.
Once you start using instant messaging, you can't believe how you ever got along without it.
ICQ is actually owned by AOL.

I love ICQ! A few of our close friends have ICQ and every now and then we are able to chat with them. It keeps us in touch on a day to day basis...saves on the phone bill too! Email is great too...but I like having the real time chat, being able to ask a question and getting an answer right away is cool!
If anyone else out there has ICQ, my number is #62392880 feel free to message me!

My mother recently downloaded ICQ onto her computer and said she was having problems...I must be one of the lucky few! Does anyone know if there is something like ICQ, but universal? So I can talk to people who have ICQ, yahoo, AOL, and msn messanger? I heard of it once but can't remember where to find it or what to call it!
Interesting - haven't heard about it yet.
By the way, my little sister installed ICQ on one of our computers by mistake (well, she didn't ask me first and that was a mistake :))
Anyway, now I remember why I don't like it. It's so agressive! We try very hard to uninstall but it just won't go away... I really don't like it. AOL is also too agressive. They once installed it on my como while I was visiting one of their pages! It was also very hard to get rid off.

I have ICQ.....It's pretty cool.
I don't keep it on very often, only when I am in here, so Jim can IM me if he needs to.
I had it before too...but I kept getting messages from strangers wanting to talk about some really strange things....ya know what I mean?!
It's not so bad, but don't put yourself on for 'available to chat' because if you do anyone can IM you.
I do like it though.
I use MSN, ICQ, and AOL. Each of them have people i couldnt contact with other messengers. The annoying thing with ICQ is the cluttered interface.

I had ICQ for awhile but evidently the program didn't like my computer much... weird things happend while I was using it. Plus, I got a lot of Porn advertisements... so I turned it off. I use Yahoo and MSN Messenger now. Had AIM for awhile but it took up tons of space. It was a nice program though - but we're trying to get rid of some things because our available memory is being gobbled up.

Cool chic...the program you're talking about is called Odigo. It combines the four main instant messangers in one program.

I use both ICQ and AIM (I'm "Austruck1" on AIM, and #61544319 on ICQ, for anyone who cares). I have likes and dislikes of both.
Earlier versions of ICQ used to mess with my computer too, but the latest one(s) [2000a and 2000b] seem to be more stable. What I like about ICQ over AIM is that you can leave short messages for people even if they're not currently online. You can't do that with AIM.
But, I've found that there are far more lewd, bold people on ICQ. It also seems more international, MANY more people from Europe and around the world than on AIM right now (that's both good and bad). And ANY time I've ever opened up and let anyone chat with me, I've regretted it (the nerve of some people). So, I've gone back to making folks ask permission to add me to their contact lists.
With ICQ, people can search profiles whether you're online or not and find people to talk to. I'm not aware that you can do this in AIM. (People's profiles aren't available when they're offline, and I don't even think there is a database you can search randomly for people, is there?)
AIM seems to be catching up with ICQ in terms of instant file transfers and stuff, and it will probably eventually allow people to leave messages for folks who aren't online.
But I'll probably still carry and use both, if only to be able to talk to friends who only use one or the other.

I love ICQ! It's my primary messenger service. I don't like 2000b though...it has way too many useless features. I also have AIM (I have AOL) and I use MSN to basically know when I have new mail.
If anyone wants to contact me, here's the info:
ICQ: 46316498
AIM: Anywho128
MSN: anytim@hotmail.com
Like Tim I love my ICQ.
I didnt bother to download 2000b though as 2000a does everyting I want, and more.
It seems every time a new version of a program comes out it is bigger and filled with features that you wouldnt want to use.
