A mailing list is made of all the emails of list members. When one of the members sends an email to the list, it reaches each and every other member. With the members contributions, the list can become a place for discussions and debates of all kinds.

Mailing lists are dedicated to different issues. There are tens of thousands of mailing lists, so there are various topics to choose from.

Something to bear in mind before joining a mailing list, is the expected volume of messages. Some lists have hundreds or thousands of members. Imagine your mail box if you joined one of them - even if each member posts only once a week... That is why most lists will let you subscribe to a digest. The daily digest brings you all the messages of each day in a single e-mail message.

Check out lists in http://www.egroups.com, http://www.topica.com and http://www.listbot.com. You can join a list that interests you or start a list of your own.

If you know of any interesting mailing lists that you can recommend, I'd love to hear about them.

I'm on one mailing list at familyfirst.com. I need to unsubscribe because it drives me nuts. Basically, I registered for their forum and started getting daily emails.

I'd never do that on my site. I plan to have a mailing list (a newsletter basically) and forums. But I think it's wrong to subscribe anyone to a list without them asking for it specifically. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's considered spamming.
