What's the true goal?

I say, "Destroy Israel."

Let me qualify that. I don't want to destroy Israel. I think that is the Palestinians' true desire.

It is interesting that the former Prime Minister of Israel (can't recall his name) pretty much gave Arafat the homeland he said he wanted and Arafat walked away from the deal.

Palestinians' true desire: homeland
Arafat and his cohorts true desire: simply make life miserable for Jews, to stay in power

Another question pops into my mind. What is the purpose and goal behind making the Jews miserable given that Arafat really isn't interested in a homeland?

Power. Arafat keeps the war going, stays in power - and I believe there's also an element of destruction of Israel in there too.
It's also worth noting that Israel hasn't exactly been kind on some key issues - e.g. settlements, but that is no justification for the war that has been waged on Israeli civilians.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/justin/nat/newsnat-5jun2003-11.htmUnited States President George W Bush has won key pledges from the Israeli and Palestinian prime ministers at a landmark summit in Jordan.
Israel has promised to begin to uproot some settlement outposts in the West Bank and the Palestinian leader pledged to push for an end to armed struggle for a state.
The promises from Israeli leader Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Abu Mazen set in motion an international "road map" for peace and Palestinian statehood.Hamas and Islamic Jihad promised their normal malarkey."We will never be ready to lay down arms until the liberation of the last centimetre of the land of Palestine," Hamas official Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi said.
Islamic Jihad, another group sworn to Israel's destruction, followed suit.

Do you think it will last at all?

I don't see how it will last. Those two groups seem to hate each other so much.

Beg to differ.
Do we even realize what the U.S. did back when it took took the land from Palestine, and made it into Israel. The question is, would we willingly give up OUR homes for another?
And the Israelis are just as bad as the Palestinians. Taking sides is hard because each side has their own fair share of bad decisions and acts.

I meant the Israelis and the Palestinians when I said "those two groups."

Do you think we are getting any closer to peace now?

I hope so, even though I don't really follow it that much. And there must be something i'm missing out on... oh well, it's not really a topic i'd enjoy debating, imho. the whole thing's pretty depressing, actually.

As long as Arafat is control, there will be no peace. He's stated over and over and over that the goal is to destroy Israel. Abbu is Arafat's puppet. Dealing with him is like dealing with one of Saddam's sons (who fortunately are no longer able to deal with anyone but the devil).
No matter what "deal" comes out of Bush's attempts, peace will not happen. This goes back to Abraham and Ishmail. It's got a long, long history.
This ain't the Palestinians, but check out this one:Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday told a summit of Islamic leaders that "Jews rule the world by proxy" and the world's 1.3 billion Muslims should unite, using non-violent means for a "final victory.
His speech at the Organization of the Islamic Conference summit, which he was hosting, drew criticism from Jewish leaders, who warned it could spark more violence against Jews.
Mahathir, who is known for his outspoken, anti-Western rhetoric, criticized what he described as Jewish domination of the world and Muslim nations' inability to adequately respond to it as he opened the meeting of Islamic leaders from 57 nations.
"The Europeans killed 6 million Jews out of 12 million, but today the Jews rule the world by proxy," Mahathir said. "They get others to fight and die for them." http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,100234,00.html
