I saw "Identity" today. It was excellent. John Cusack and Ray Liotta were great. It is a combination slasher/mystery.

We watched Bend it Like Beckham last night. It was pretty good.

I'm tired of every movie needing to have someone homosexual in it. It's not a movie I'll be able to watch with my daughter until she is a lot older. I don't want to have to explain all that.

We were talking last night about this aspect. My wife was the first to complain, and I pointed out that with our daughter the bigger issue was the sister and her fiance having sex in the car at the airport. My wife commented that she had been so dumbed down by the nonstop sex in movies, that she totally wasn't shocked by it, but she was shocked by the gay agenda. We both agreed that it is pretty sad in both instances.

Alec

I liked Bend it Like Beckham too.

It does seem like we have been dumbed down by the immorality of the world. We just accept it as normal.

I saw two movies this weekend: Raising Helen and The Day After Tomorrow. Neither will win any awards, but they were entertaining.

The Day After movie has that kid from Donnie Darko. Has anyone else seen Donnie Darko? It is good.

CuriousG
06-01-2004, 09:30 AM
Donnie Darko was a great movie. That guy looks a lot like Toby Maguire. I can't remember what his name is though, the funny thing is that I think he is or at least was dating Kirsten Dunst.

OK, so I finally saw the Matrix Revolutions last night. (About time, right?) It was pretty dissapointing. Oh well, I thought they should have stopped after the first one anyway.

Speaking of Donnie Darko, (as we were before) I heard a rumor that they are talking about re-releasing it since its become such a cult classic. That's kind of interesting. I saw The Day After Tomorrow this past weekend. It was pretty good, a bit of an environmentalist flair to it, but not too much. There was some pretty good irony in the movie.

I liked "The Stepford Wives." I need to see the original to see which one is better.

Christopher Walken is turning into one of my favorite actors.

CuriousG
07-12-2004, 09:25 AM
I have never seen a bad Christopher Walken performance. Even some so-so movies had great characters played by Walken. He is definately a scene stealer. I always liked it when he was on Saturday Night Live. He was hilarious! He was great in "The Rundown," which was actually a pretty good movie in my opinion.

Did anyone see Catwoman yet? Is it any good?

CuriousG
07-28-2004, 08:47 AM
Nope, last three movies I've seen are:

Bourne Supremacy: Very good, although a few too many hand-held camera shots.

Anchorman: OK for a few laughs, but I've definately seen better from Will Farrell. Although, most people I know liked it. I guess I just wasn't in the mood.

Dodgeball: Very funny. Good for some just plain dumb laughs and pointless humor. Great cast.

If there is already a thread somewhere here about movies then please could one of you mods merge this for me? I didn't have time to look through very many pages to find out.

What movies (at home or in theater) have you all watched lately and what did you like or not like? I highly recommend "The Butterfly Effect" both my husband and I really loved this movie! Also "Cold Mountain" was good, and "Monster" which is based on a true story...was disturbing to say the least, but worth watching. If it wasn't for the fact that it was based on a true story it wouldn't have been so schocking, I guess. Part of me felt sorry for this woman, felt she was just doing what she thought she had to do...but then towards the end, when the killing was not out of necessity I wanted to still pity her but just could not. She was executed a couple years ago they said. I would like to get other thoughts on this movie....I really think this woman, if the movie portrayed it right...which they probably did not, was mentally disturbed....is it right to put people like this to death? I guess if i were the family of the innocent victems I would say yes....but seeing the movie you do feel that after all her years of abuse as a child, and given the circumstances that caused her to kill the first time (rape) you wonder if maybe she might not have been better off serving life, instead of the death penalty....but i don't know...movies always try to make things seem different than they really were. Just curious if any of you saw the movie and had any coments about it or what movies you might all recommend. :) Have any of you seen "The secrect window" or Human stain"? We have those two videos reserved for tommorow night.

We made a decision to stop going to movies with nudity in them, and unfortunately, all but one of those has nudity.

We really like Secret Window. It was very good.

I don't personally believe there is any excuse for murder -- killing with malice aforethought. I don't care if you are 10 years old, 90 years old, male, female, sane, insane, genius or mentally retarded. If you commit murder (killing with malice aforethought), you should get the death penalty.

I feel sorry for the woman being abused as a child. That is horrible, but it doesn't excuse her own behavior. There are many people who were abused as children who don't go on killing sprees.

{offtopic} Wait a sec... if you commit murder.... you should be murdered?

I've been meaning to see the Butterfly Effect, but haven't gotten around to it yet, and I saw a little of Cold Mountain on dvd last week - only so-so.

jamesglewisf
08-15-2004, 01:04 AM
The death penalty is not murder. It is punishment (penalty). If the rule is: You will be put to death for committing murder; and you commit murder anyhow, then you are receiving the punishment for your crime.

theyeti
08-16-2004, 01:58 AM
If murder is "killing with malice aforethought," doesn't capital punishment qualify? It seems to me like both punishment/penalty AND murder.

CuriousG
08-16-2004, 08:32 AM
Malice implies the disregard for the law and/or disregard for the rights of the victim. However, with capital punishment, the rights of the accused have been addressed and the entire proceedings are performed according to the parameters of the law.

If you murder someone, you know what the punishment is. As far as I'm concerned, when you are sentenced to capital punishment after you commit a murder, you not only committed murder, you committed suicide.

Back to the topic at hand...

I agree with you up to a certain point. I don't know that a 10 year old should be put to death...yes, they committed murder...but they are still a child!!! I just can't see electrocuting a 10 year old. If they are 15 or 16...maybe.....I'm not sure on that either...but 10??? That just doesn't seem right to me. And the other thing I disagree with...mentally retarded people....a truley mentally retarded person is not responsible for their actions...many of them have the brain equivalent of a 3 year old. They cannot function normally in society and are usually or should be in homes that specialize in their care. If they were to murder someone...they have no real concept of death....their brains do not work right...to put them to death is just not right. It would be like putting a 3 year old to death for killing their cat. A mentally retarded person does not see killing a person as any different than an animal and does not know right from wrong like we do. But that is just my opinion and maybe I am wrong.

Debby did your young one like Home on the Range? Did you?

We just rented Hildago. Even our teens came in and sat down and watched it. We looked the main character up on the net. Interesting history there. This is one we will buy for our shelf.

I thought I would really like Lady Killers. I rented it for me on my day off this past week. I had a hard time getting past the the "F" word being used all through this movie. It was good but not my favorite Tom Hanks movie. That would have to be Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump.

SO Hildago is good then? I have been meaning to rent that one when I get time.

Personally, I thought the cussing on the Wayan's actor (forgot his first name) was a bit much. But then the script was wrote that way.

Hidalgo is good. What a bonus too that the actor, portraying Frank Hopkins, is Viggo Mortenson.

jamesglewisf

I thought it was weird that only Marlon Wayans did a lot of cussing. How do you know it was written that way? Have you seen the script. The first version with Alec Guinness didn't have that much cussing.

From what I understand, "the grudge" is a remake of an old Japanese horror show. There's lots of spook in it!Actually, The Grudge is a remake of "Ju-on: The Grudge" which came out in 2003. http://imdb.com/title/tt0364385/

The same director made both movies, the second one was just aimed at English-speaking audiences. Here is the plot. According to Japanese lore, "The Grudge" is the curse of one who dies in the grip of a powerful rage. Those who encounter this murderous supernatural curse are killed and the curse is reborn, passed on from victim to victim in an endless, ever growing chain of horror. Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an American nurse living in Tokyo, unknowingly uncovers the source of the curse and must somehow escape the impending fits of rage and madness which will inevitably lead to her demise.http://movies.yahoo.com/movies/feature/thegrudge.html

Okay we watched the Alamo. It was historically close to being very correct. We all know the embleshments exist. It was slow taking off but then when the action picked up it was great. The actor they chose to portrayed Santa Anna did an excellent job. Billy Bob Thornton was Davy Crockett. He did a great job too.

I Saw the Incredibles!!!!!! It was the best computer animated movie that Pixar has made yet. I know when it comes out it will be on my shelf at home. It was soooooo cute, Its about a family of 5 and they are all super heroes :) Very cute. From what I read here...
http://www.kids-in-mind.com/n/nationaltreasure.htm

Doesn't look worthy of a G rating....Don't think ratings necessarily have JUST to do with cleanliness of a movie....

I don't think that some of the subject matter in this warrents it suitable for all ages. Not to mention the amount of violence (not enough to warrant it a violent movie, but certainly not all of that should be viewed by little kids.)

I cried when they won. What a movie and they did such a good bringing back the memories of how depressed America was and how these young men raised our spirits again. Awesome movie and very well done. It is one of those you could watch over and over. Kinda like Radio. I loved that movie too.

jaimegerise,

I think we might be on different wavelengths. I was surprised that they made the movie clean enough (including subject matter) to be rated PG. I wasn't complaining about the rating it was given.

Has anyone seen Angels in America? I was wondering if its worth renting :)

Marcos
11-23-2004, 04:38 AM
I havn't seen Angels in America but I heard it got a few awards for acting and story.

I saw The Incredibles and I thought it was great. I love Pixar movies. They really find humor in everyday things. And I think that it was Eisner's fault that Pixar didn't renew their relationship with Disney. Eisner is ruining Disney.

Justawoman
11-23-2004, 07:42 AM
I asked last night if any of my crowd had heard of Angels in America. One of them said they had heard it was a pretty dark piece. It is about two men dying with Aids is what she said. If you are into heavy dramatic movies then it is worth renting.

jamesglewisf
11-23-2004, 08:54 AM
There are a lot of people who think Eisner is killing Disney. I'm not disagreeing, but why do people think that? Other than the obvious fact that Disney isn't doing well.

CuriousG
11-23-2004, 09:27 AM
Actually, Disney revenues were up 25% this last quarter. They did pretty good in all areas, except in films, to a degree. I think a lot of people just pitch their grudges with Disney at Michael Eisner since he's the man that embodies Disney in a single person.

Anyone see the Spongebob movie? Just curious.

Marcos
11-24-2004, 08:00 AM
Actually CuriousG, there are many good reasons that people don't like Eisner. I could list a few here but this is not the forum for it. If you want I could give you the title of a good book that outlines the changes Eisner has made at Disney that is not in keeping with the traditions of what Disney stood for. That is why Roy Disney left the company.

I also saw Elf recently. I have always thought that Will Ferrel is a great actor and all of his movies are funny. Did you see him in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy? That is even funnier than Elf.

CuriousG
11-24-2004, 09:10 AM
Yes, buy Eisner couldn't make all of those changes on his own. The board of directors had to endorse and enact his changes. Now it seems that some of those changes backfired a bit and they have made Eisner the scapegoat with his approaching departure. It's a business and they're trying to make as much money as they can, just like any other business. However, when your business is geared toward family and children and supposedly based on positive values, etc., your decisions are usually held to a larger and more prominent level of scrutiny.

Our ten year old wanted me to watch Garfield with her. It was okay. Odie was not Odie and an animated cat in a real world sure stuck out like a sore thumb. It was humorous at times and then there were times I was like huh?????? Nermal was not a kitten but a full grown siamese cat and was not even related to Garfield in the movie. I grew up with a Garfield cartoon fan, my big brother. He would be disappointed.

One reason to watch it with a bunch of teen girls Alec. They can make anything entertaining.

We watched "Without a Paddle" last night. Hubby and I were skeptical at first. Then it was like oh yeah we totally get the whole friend thing and the one last great adventure. It was cute and if anyone else has seen it was the old bearded man at the end Burt Reynolds. My daughter took it out before the credits roled. But over all a very good movie for laughs.

CuriousG
01-17-2005, 10:28 AM
I just saw "Without a Paddle" recently, too. It wasn't what I expected. I thought it was going to be more goofy humor, but there was actually a message to it. It was ok, though, it just threw me off guard. The bear was funny.

I watched "Super Size Me" this weekend. It wasn't bad. It was interesting to see how much the guy's physical health was affected in such a short amount of time. It made me buy a bunch of healthy stuff when I went grocery shopping.

Justawoman
01-17-2005, 12:25 PM

Okay, I have three movie recommendations...and if you watch these...you won't be sorry.

Collateral (forgive my spelling) ...one of the best movies I have seen for quite
awhile. It is the highest on my "do see" list. :) I highly recommend it!!!!

The Manchurian Candidate......excellent movie...I loved it...the first 20 minutes are a bit confusing then it is really good! (I even watched it twice!)

The Forgotten......this is awesome....any parent will love this!!!!!!!!!!! (and you don't have to be a parent to love it!)

The Forgotten has to do with children disappearing and peoples lives changing overnight by some unseen force. It looks strange.

01-22-2005, 10:54 AM
Here is the plot summary I found for the Forgotten:

A grieving mother, Telly Parada, is struggling to cope with the loss of her 9-year-old son. She is stunned when her psychiatrist and her husband tell her that she has created eight years of memories of a son she never had. But when she meets the father of one of her son's friend who is having the same experience, Telly embarks on a mission to prove her son's existence and her sanity.

Nope we watched an old standard in our house. Bonnie and Clyde. Faye and Warren do such a good job in that movie. I still want to strangle Buck Barrow's wife everytime we watch it. What a mouth that woman had. Screech, screech, screech , screech ,screech. Where's my duct tape?

We also watch The Big Country. Charlton Heston, Burl Ives, Gregory Peck, Chuck Connors, and Jean Simmons. What a great western. I love the fact it was made back when they were all pretty much unknowns. It was after this movie that the same director cast Charlton Heston in Ben Hur. I love classic movies. No statements of any kind being made, just pure entertainment for the sake of entertainment.

We watched 'Blow' the other day. Johnny Depp sure looks weird as a blonde, but don't let that stop ya from watching it ... it's a great movie ... {popcorn}
Based upon the book, 'Blow: How a Small-Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellin Cocaine Cartel and Lost it All' by Bruce Porter, BLOW is the story of George Jung who is currently serving a 15 year sentence. This is the true story of Jung who worked for reputed drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, and is accused of single-handedly importing cocaine into the USA in the 1970's. Jung's rise and fall coincides with the switch from pot to cocaine as the drug of choice among the rich and famous.

I've just eascaped by the skin of my teeth - my 11-year old wanted to see Spongebob, his older brother had already spent his pocket money on something else, his big sister couldn't go as soon as he wanted to due to social engagements :D which left me.

"I can't afford it this week" I explained ... then up speaks my husband "Here you are dear, I'll give you the money now!" (Some husbands just aren't mean enough at the right time!)

Happily two of his friends want to go after school tomorrow, so I won't have to sit through it myself. I certainly didn't want him sitting at the cinema alone though, and they aren't showing it at the "children only" time.

At least on TV Spongebob only lasts half-an-hour! (Though I think it's clever cutting cartoon with real film.)

02-25-2005, 08:06 AM
Our ten year old asked me if we were going to buy the SpongeBob DVD when it comes available. I honestly told her I don't know how I feel about that considering all the hoopla about the fact that there are so many underlying homosexual messages in it. I might buy it and watch it first and then decide if she should watch it. I don't think I would let her go without me to see it though. I know my spouse would have a cow if I did. I just wish all these special groups would quit infiltrating the movie industry and allow movies to be entertaining for the sake of entertainment. I guess they don't know how to write a screenplay without all the politics anymore. Lack of talent?

I've seen Spongebob, and I don't see any underlying homosexual themes in it. I think people are just too uptight and looking for an excuse. Maybe someone found out that there is a high level executive behind the show who happens to be gay, and now of course he must have some homosexual agenda to promote in a cartoon. Give me a break, people need to worry about the cartoons where the characters do nothing but fight and glorify violence. Give me the choice between letting my kids watch a cartoon about a supposedly gay sea sponge and one where the characters and their foes beat the tar out of eachother each week, and I'll say "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea..."

Well parents are hanged if they do care and hanged if they don't. I figured it was more blowing smoke than reality. I watch the cartoon series with her and I think they are hilarious.

We watched 'Blow' the other day. Johnny Depp sure looks weird as a blonde, but don't let that stop ya from watching it ... it's a great movie ... {popcorn}

Is this a new one? I seem to recall watching a movie with the same title or a similar title a few years ago...I can't remember who was in it, but I thought it was called Blow and was about a cocaine mogule. it was a really good movie, from what I remember...did they remake it??

Our ten year old asked me if we were going to buy the SpongeBob DVD when it comes available. I honestly told her I don't know how I feel about that considering all the hoopla about the fact that there are so many underlying homosexual messages in it.

What????? Spongebob's gay??? This is the first I had heard of it! (I don't get out much) I must say my daughter loves spongebob and I have never seen any gay undertones in the series...who says he is gay? I hadn't heard the hoopla...what are they saying?

First, this is a thank you to Jim for the Movies Without Nudity site. I went investigating. The whole site is really well done. I was scrolling through the new releases and this movie, Whore (Yo Puta) made me do a double take. Puta is Mexican and it is never used in a good way when talking to a woman. So I did a search on what this movie was about. Interviews with prostitutes and then it cuts into a fiction story starring Darryl Hannah. The cover of the movie alone would make me assume there is nudity in this film. Let's just say this woman won't have a bikini line to worry about when she is through. But all in all I liked the site. I wouldn't have stopped at this movie if not for the Mexican dialect and knowing it is considered a cuss word in these parts. It just had me down right curious where the title of this movie was taking the viewer. I did take into consideration that you do let the viewer on your site know you rely on the internet for some of your reviews. After all an intelligent movie viewer can take a step further, like I did, and go investigate for themselves.

Thanks for the compliment. My wife and I tired of seeing nakedidity (her word) in movies and decided to stop going to movies that contained nudity. I wanted some kind of list of movies that contained nudity so that when I was renting a movie or going to the theater I wouldn't be surprised. The MPAA rating descriptions are not always accurate. I put a list together for my PDA, and then decided to make a website out of it. I get most of my information from other sites that provide parental reviews of movies like www.kids-in-mind.com (http://www.kids-in-mind.com/) and www.screenit.com (http://www.screenit.com/).

A lot of people think it is a dumb criteria for choosing movies, but it works for us. Of course, it is not our only criteria, just one of the big ones. I'm sure we're missing a lot of really good movies, but that's OK.

I couldn't agree more that movies with nudity and obscene language just doesn't cut it. I mean, you see ONE movie like that, and they all seem to follow suit. I like to go to movies that friends have seen already, or where I can read a preview of it.

Well sometimes it is appropriate for the movie. Take the Aviator for instance.... Howard Hughes did roam around in his flat naked. If you are going to tell a story true to life then you can't leave that out without taking something away from the story.

Now sometimes you can tell it is just there for pure shock affect. That is tasteless.

We went and saw Constantine last night. We liked it.

I've been wanting to see that, it looks interesting. We went and saw Hitch last weekend. It was ok, not quite as funny as I thought it was going to be. I'm a big fan of the King of Queens, Kevin James is funny. They needed more of him in the movie. I thought it was going to be more comedy and less love story, I was led astray.
