Hi there!
I haven't been around here much for the past couple of years, and for that I apologize...I moderate another site and just don't have the time I used to have before I had my baby. I recently got laid off from my job, so I'm hoping to have more time to come here.

Anyway....my question is....

My daughter is almost 16 months old. She is my only child and I was almost 37 when I had her. She has lately started being very very stubborn...she wants what she wants, when she wants it and if I don't give it to her she throws an absolute fit! She will scream and cry and sometimes throw herself on the floor and kick her feet! Is this normal??? I try to just tell her "no" in a very calm voice (when it is something I don't want her to have...like when she wants a cookie before supper)...but sometimes it gets to the point where I can't think straight because she is being so loud and it is so tempting to just give in, although I know this is not the right thing to do. I don't want to teach her that throwing a fit is the way to get what she wants. How else do I deal with it? I love her dearly, but she is driving me nuts with the constant whining, and fit throwing. Is this just a phase? I pray it is!!!

My daughter did this so I hope it's normal!

As to your question about is this a phase...it will be just a phase unless you give in.Once you give in,she has you on a string and will try the same technique every time she doesn't get what she wants.And...they go through this phase more than once but at different ages, the wants just get bigger.

Just remember...there is a big difference between wants and needs.

When Pickle went through this at that age,I put a safety gate in her door and put her in her room and then I went and did something that involved noise like washing dishes.Eventually, after yelling and screaming "momma" for 20-30 minutes, she either tired herself out or got interested in something else.

Welcome to the onset of terrible twos! Do not give in, because they will think they can get away with it! Usually waiting it out will work, and try using distraction techniques. Also a good age to start giving her the choices, small ones of course, IE, do you want to wear the red pj's or blue pj's. Knowing that they have a say in things, albeit small can make all the difference in the world.

Yeah. Normal. Just don't give in.

It will stop eventually, but you might have to stop taking her out to eat for a while because there is no real way to solve the problem in public. You can't send your child to her room while at the restaurant. Just find a good babysitter.

I moderate at a lovely little site called "Thecatsite" for people who love to talk about cats and anything else that is on their minds. :) I actually have 10, 500 posts there! WHEW! In only three years! I guess I talk alot! ;) The neat thing is...this site is where I actually met THAT site....make sense?...I originally...many moons ago, was a member of a site called Chins & Quills...because I owned hedgehogs...through that site I met Jim...who owned this site and I came here and loved it...even moderated here for a short while...then this site close down...and so I moved on to thecatsite, because one of the members here had just started it. Then a couple years later I got word this site was back up and running....I was thrilled...but I have so little time anymore to be at both places. It is nice to be back though!!!

Thank you to all who answered my question...I am really trying hard not to give in to her!!!! She just has such a major attitude! But she is still sooo cute!!! I think she knows she has me wrapped around her finger!
