View Full Version : Digital Photography
I wasn't sure where to put this thread. Feel free to move it if I put it in the wrong place.
I'm trying to get into digital photography. I thought a thread about it might be good.
Olympus has a really cool new printer that hooks right up to your digital camera - http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_product_lobbypage.asp?l=1&bc=23&p=19&product=950.
Sony has one like it - http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=UeXeb2tyApveYCtHC1nUZCRjF7PF7OcuOes=?CategoryName=dcc_DIAccessoryPrinters_DigitalPhotoPrin ters&ProductSKU=DPPEX50&Dept=dcc.
Both printers cost about $200, but the cost per print is about 50¢ to 70¢. That's about twice the normal cost. They also say that the dye-sub prints may fade faster over time.

I have two new digital cameras. My 35MM SLR replacement is a Nikon D100. It's great.
My 35MM point-and-shoot replacement is a Nikon Coolpix 5700. I really like it too. They have a lot of the same features and controls. They can also share a flash.

I don't like the delay on digital cameras. You push the button, and they don't take the picture immediately.

Yeah, ours has that problem too - very annoying. It's a Nikon, but I'm not at home so I couldn't tell you what exactly.

Cannot the "delay" be altered by adjusting the settings? I have a Sony Cybershot and I can adjust mine.
Maybe it depends upon the camera.

I just got a second-hand Fuji FinePix from eBay, and it's great! The pictures are good, and it does everything I want it to (I'm no David Bailey!)

Have you printed any pics yet? I've had a digital camera for a couple of months, and I've yet to print a pic.

It's great having a digital camera. I still have undeveloped film from 5+ years ago. Now I can just put my pictures on my computer and not worry about bending or losing them. I can delete all the bad pictures I take instead of realizing they're bad after I pay to have them developed. I think my digital camera was definately one of my best investments.

I agree, it's a riot having a digital. You never ever have to worry about wasting your film - that's for sure! I just don't know how I lived without one for so long! :-P

The thing that's really annoying me about pictures right now...
The computer we have the camera software and hookup stuff on isn't connected to the internet... so to post pictures anywhere I have to dowload them to the other computer, then copy to a disk, and download them on this computer. Which isn't hard, but I'm lazy and it takes more time and effort. :P

Get yourself one of those like 6 in 1 media card readers. You can just take the memory card out of the camera and plug it into the reader and you can download straight to your computer. I bought mine for about $12 and I can take the card out of most cameras and put it in there to get the pictures. It just hooks into a usb port.

Teresa, I agree. It's like a whole new way of thinking about pictures.
Theyeti, if your camera uses a USB cable, USB ports are pretty cheap. You could just add one to the other PC. That 6-in-1 thing sounds pretty cool.

Only on plain paper - the colour etc is fime for what I want. But I imagine it wouldn't keep as well as "real" photos would. And I don't know how long CDs etc are going to keep - after all, when you dig out your wedding photos to show the great-grandchildren, will there be machines capable of reading them, if they survive?

What software do you use to make VCD's? The software that came with my camera doesn't always work, and will only write CDR, so if it goes wrong I've lost a whole CD. And I can't add captions that show on the photo slide show, except by editing each one with a graphics program before I make the disc.
I found a great program today that edits the photos, and will add captions and make slide shows - but the basic version won't create video discs. I may upgrade to the paid version - it's a great program. http://www.studioline.net/EN/
I've been looking at the various programs today, and tried some of the free ones, but not found exactly what I want yet - apart from maybe StudioLine. I'd better start saving ...

Forgot to say - I broke my camera last week, falling over a brokn paving slab. I'm being thoroughly unChristian and unforgiving, and plan to claim compensation from the council - their policy is to "pay compensation because it's cheaper than mending the pavements" (I'm quoting the Highways dept). {pukeface} I may have to go to the small claims court, I'm just waiting to hear if my dear little camera is repairable ot not.

What is a VCD?
I think if you tripped you shoudn't sue because the pavement was uneven.

I mean those video discs that you can copy your photos to and then watch on your TV. Have I got the initials wrong? {confused}

I wouldn't normally bother - I was blessed, I landed in the road but as it was a Sunday afternoon there was no traffic. If it had been a weekday, I wouldn't be making this post - there's a blind bend right before where I fell. And I'm fairly fit with good eyesight - an elderly or blind person wouldn't have had a chance. It's not just uneven, it's broken and cracked concrete, with bits sticking up and holes where pieces are missing. And our council have had £16000 worth of mobile phones sitting in a cupboard, bought for staff who all prefer to use their own phones! No wonder they don't want to spend money fixing pavements.

If you've been putting Very Cute Dogs into your DVD player, I'll have to report you for cruelty. ;)

No need, he didn't fit, so I couldn't put him in there.
