I recently purchased an 8 port 10/100 switch for around $75 yesterday. I was amazed to see the price of one so low. By having it switched two nodes on the network have 100 mbps full duplex communication... Translation, FAST... Also because it is switched you don't have any collisions... Granted there won't be very many on a network with only 8 computers but it will definitely speed things up a bit...

Bragging would be saying I had a managed switch and router topology with 3 VLAN's set up, one for my gaming business, one for surfing the web, and one for my FTP/Web servers...
This is NOT the network I have but it is one I wouldn't mind having in a few years... :)
Can I come play?

Nowadays, you can get switched networks so cheap that I wouldn't get anything else. Dell has a managed gigabit switch now:
