1. An inch-thick rope of spider's silk can withstand up to __________ pounds of pressure.

blinc

Oh boy, that's some strong stuff... I'd say 5,000?

In_His_Shadow
11-01-2000, 01:59 PM
I agree blinc, it's going to be alot more than we think. I'll go a ton.

Didn't that answer work somewhere else {toothy}

TTP

Not quite, your about...a lot off!
I know the answer in lbs, and well it's hard to believe...some cities aren't even as big as this stuff is strong...

TTP
11-02-2000, 06:48 AM
No guesses? Utah should know this one, he got the email too.
Give them the answer. ;)

blinc
11-02-2000, 06:55 AM
10 Tons!?

TTP
11-02-2000, 07:10 AM
How many pounds is that?
Is the conversion 2586 lbs per ton? I forget?
If so...that would be 25,860 lbs...getting closer but still not even half way there...

blinc
11-02-2000, 08:07 AM
I think it's 2,000 lbs = 1 ton. The 2,586... I think you're thinking of 5,286 ft. in a mile? I think that's how many feet are in a mile... just where would one check that out? AAGGH! School knowledge draining away. {dizzy}

Ok then, I'll guess 50,000 lbs!!

TTP
11-02-2000, 08:15 AM
2000 sounds closer anyhow?? Not sure...I'll go look it up.

BTW- You're still almost half way there. :)
Aren't I a pain?

TTP
11-02-2000, 08:27 AM
2000 lbs per ton it is I guess.
Hmmm, *calculates*
I'll give you a hint, it's more than 50 tons!

blinc
11-02-2000, 08:50 AM
My last guess... 125,000 lbs! There!

This is unbelievable - I had NO idea the silk stuff was this strong.

TTP
11-02-2000, 08:55 AM
Since you give up and all, the number that was given to me...I haven't actually went out and looked it up to prove this because I trust it came from a good source is:

140,000 pounds! Incredible!

blinc
11-02-2000, 01:52 PM
Amazing! Maybe I'll start saving the cobwebs around here! Knit myself a good anchor rope for the ol' boat, huh?

Hey, I have a girl friend who is researching spider silk at the University of Wyoming. They can now make it without a spider. They genetically engeenered a bacteria called E. coli to make silk that so that it is cheaper to produce. What they are trying to do is make textiles from it. An 3-5 cm thick slab of this stuff can stop a bullet so they want to make bullet proof vests from it. Unfortunately, if it gets wet it shrinks over 50% of its size, meaning that if the office dumps coffee on his vest, the vest will shrink and crush him. They are trying to isolate the gene that makes the protien that causes this and try to remove it. Another problem is that since bacteria are making it they cannot make it into a thread, but they almost have that figured out. A student playing with it gave them the idea, but I dont know what it is, sorry.
Spider silk is really cool stuff.

DK Tahg.....they are calling this new wonderful bacteria E Coli?

And this a silk? I think this may be a bad name....lol....since in America, E-Coli, is a death threatening bacteria, that causes serious illness, and usually is gotten from raw meat.

DkTahg
01-24-2001, 11:58 PM
Debby, You have E.Coli right now in you intestines! E.coli is one of the most common bacteria on the planet! It becomes deadly when the immune system get over loaded by it such as eating raw meat! Kindda like Salmonella, it's everywhere. Actually, we were playing with e.coli in bio lab. It is a really cool bacteria. It has a simple genome so it is the "lab rat" of the microbes.

E.coli is used to produce as genetically engeenered hosts to bactrophages (virus that attack bacteria). Viruses, at least some, infultrate the bacteria's genome with there own genome and carry on protien systhases to make more viruses. But somtimes, the baby viruses will take some of the bacteria's genome (specialized transduction) with them and if that peice of the genome is altered, say with a piece of human genome, it can be used for gene therapy!

But your right, E.coli is deadly! :)

Zephyrus
01-25-2001, 12:22 AM
Well in our bio lab we didn't quite get to genetic engineering, but they told us to wash our hands really well afterwards {toothy}

Question about gene therapy. I'm studying this stuff, but I've only just finished first year so I don't know all that much! Gene therapy involves getting the virus to attack all human cells, to insert the *corrected* genome into our own genes in order to cure some disease, right? Isn't that impossible?? Wouldn't it have to infect all the trilions of cells that make up our body? And as far as I know, the virus inserts it's DNA or RNA into a cell, forces the cell to shut down everything and make virus proteins and DNA/RNA, and then when there is enough viruses, they bust the cell and break free...a bit confusing :)

Debby
01-25-2001, 07:36 PM
Thank you for informing me!! Hey I learned something today! (And who ever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks? LOL)

DkTahg
01-25-2001, 09:14 PM
You know Zephyrus, I really dont know, as i am learing about it too! I think you just get a injection of the RNA/DNA modified viruses. I dont think you need to infect all the cells in the body. Remember, the virus inserts the DNA into the cytoplasm of the target cell and some sort of mechanism causes it to bind to the cells genome, and hopefull correcting the problem gene. After that, the cell, if need be, carries on mitosis and divides. This is my understanding of it. But, i will cite this from my Genetics book.

A patient by the name of Dan Miller was born in 1949 with hemophilia. He went through all of the usual procedurs as time went on (and fortunatly he did not get AIDS from blood transfusion) but the relief from the procedurs only lasted for a short time (Lewis 11).

Miller claims that: "The [gene therapy] treatment is three infusions, one a day for three days.... In the 8 weeks before the infusion, I used 8 doses of the factor [VIII clotting protien]. In the fourteen weeks since then, I've used three (Lewis 11)."

Lewis, Ricki. Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications. 4th ed. Boston: McGraw Hill, 2001.

Also, i have yet to play with E.Coli that has been genetically modified by humans, only my girl friend has! The e.coli I played with was "semi wild" (grown in a petri dish). We we determining if it became resistant to certain antibiotics; which it did, which I find increadably facinating. :)

Zephyrus
01-26-2001, 01:25 AM
That sounds very interesting! I'll definitely do some more research into all this genetic engineering stuff!

That resistance is also fascinating, although I have no idea how it works! It can't be through random mutations after every division, can it?

DkTahg
01-28-2001, 02:45 PM
The resistance can come by many different ways. If one of the bacteri in the colony is resistant to an antibiotic and survives a treatment, then it will produce a whole colony that is resistant to the antibiotic. Resistance can come from random mutation. Other genetic variations may come from conjunction between two bacteria (excahnging plasmids). It can come from generalized transduction or from specialized transduction (involving viruses). It can come fron transformation (the uptake of foreign DNA from the enviroment) and/or from transposons(DNA that changes its location in the genome).

As you probably guessed, I love this stuff :)

Zephyrus
01-29-2001, 02:33 AM
We'll get those little buggers! It's actually becoming a problem, we're running out of ammo to use against them, they're becoming resistant to almost everything we have! I've heard that they have some special antibiotics that they use only under *extreme* conditions, and in very controlled environments...scary thought, to think that it's come down to that!

blinc
02-02-2001, 10:22 AM
Wow, that's some interesting theories there about antibiotics. I know Dr's and even my vet is becoming very leery about using them, unless things are to the point where they are absolutely necessary. Scares me to think that we are creating anitibiotic resistant bacteria because of the improper use of antibiotics. One of my doc's told me that's why it's so important to finish off the dose of medicine, even if you're feeling better - so you don't leave a few bacteria alive that recuperate and then build an immunity to whatever particular antibiotic was used. Scarey stuff.

Anywho! Here's a fill in the blank riddle for ya! {toothy}

Can you complete this sentence using words which are anagrams of each other?
"At the school recently, only the __?__ students could solve the __?__ equation."

Hint: It's a five letter word.

Debby
02-03-2001, 03:43 PM
Refresh my memeory on what an anagram is....been too long since I was out of school....is that a word that looks the same but has two different meanings?

KatCo
02-04-2001, 02:24 PM
Hi Debbie,

A anagram is a word or sentence constructed out of another word or sentence by trnasposing the letters.

A Synonym is a word of the same or almost the same meaning as another word.

A Antonym is a word opposite to another in meaning.

A Homonym is one or two or more words with identical pronunciation but different spelling and meaning, as in rain, rein, and reign.

I hope that helps....:) It's been awhile since I've been out of school also, and the ol' saying of:

If you don't use it you loose it, holds so true!! (at least in my case);)

Ok... I'll give another hint to this riddle:

Can you complete this sentence using words which are anagrams of each other?
"At the school recently, only the __?__ students could solve the __?__ equation."

Hint: It's a five letter word.
Hint: Both words start with the letter "B".

Would the wicked grin be because both words are exactly the same?

blinc
02-06-2001, 10:04 PM
No, they are two different words. Here's another hint!

The first words starts with BR the 2nd word with BI.

Thanks, lol.

Okay..Start with the first word and add a three letter word to complete it.
Then take two letter’s from that three letter word and add one more to make a new three letter to complete the second word, then use two letters from the new three letter word and one other to make a three letter word to complete the third.. and so on… Does that make sense?

H I * * N *
A * V * C *
C * * * N T
* Y * * I D
P * * D * E
S * * U * H
B * A Z * *

I think I get what you mean. Make a 3 letter word to fit into the first word... H I * * N *
RIG would fit, as a 3 letter word, to make "HIRING"... Then we take 2 letters from RIG, add a third to make a word, and add it to A * V * C *, to make another word?
Oooh, this is a great riddle! :)

A * V * C * (DIE) to make the word ADVICE... are we right so far?

P * * D * E
S * * U * H
B * A Z * *

{grblob} Good morning! {grblob}
*evil cackle*

Loxodonta, I think you've gotten the next two words! {party} Alright! :)

The rule for this riddle was that we had to use two of the three letters in the three letter word, to fit into the next word. Add a letter to the two letters from the previous 3 letter word, to insert into the next word.

If RED was the first three letter word. The 3 letter word "RED" was used to make RHYMED. Then to figure out the next word, take one letter out of the word RED and make another 3 letter word, ROE (replace the D with an O). It's a bit confusing at first - because it's like a double riddle... you not only have to make another 3 letter word, but that word has to fit into the next word on the list! You did great to get the next two right off the bat! You're better at riddles then you think! {toothy}

RED to make RHYME?
ROE to make BROWSE?
ROW to make THROWN?
NOR to make IGNORE?
NOD to make UNTOLD?

These are great fun Pamella! I love word riddles! :)

Isn't Mel a little genius around us "normal" mortals??? ;)

Well, I have to admit that I somehow came up with the last three words - or rather: possible solutions for them. So far I have:
S * * R A *
S * R * * E
* S * * N T
S * R * * L
* I Z * R * : LAD to make Lizard
* R * Y E * : FAD to make Frayed
O F * * D * : FED to make Offend

Yes, I am strange, but it just seemed to "come to me" ... {blush}

blinc
02-12-2001, 07:36 AM
I think you've got those Lox, they sure seem to fit good. Drats too, cause I was thinking the word above those was sprawl - but if it was, I couldn't get anything to fit in your lizard word. Yup, think you may have got those last three. :)

loxodonta
02-12-2001, 09:18 AM
Hah!
{idea}
I finally found a solution, but had to change my lizard to a wizard, first:

S * * R A * : cab to make scarab
S * R * * E : cap to make scrape
* S * * N T : ace to make ascent
S * R * * L : caw to make scrawl
* I Z * R * : wad to make wizard
* R * Y E * : fad to make frayed
O F * * N * : fed to make offend

Thanks for the tip about the word before my former lizard, blinc! I would never have found any word, at all, without it! :) We sure make a great team! (:

Now, let's wait for Mel's decision whether this is acceptable ...
