Ok girls,
Who out there suffers from PMS? Who turns into a monster that one week every month {flame}
Who out there is going through Perimenopause, menopause or post menopause?
I'm actually in the Perimenopausal stage and I can go from this {toothy} to this {fire} in a heartbeat.
It those hot flashes that are killer.

I certainly do!
I change my whole persona.
my kids won't even come near me for about a week...the whole week before actually starting the cycle.
I have a dangerously short fuse at that time...I am impatient and do not tolerate much.
sometimes, I get so bad that I will snap at ppl just for calling my name even once!!
Ppl do not take this seriously enough...some don't even think it is real....They're sooooo wrong!
If only they knew.

I go through the wicked chocolate and salt cravings. Just give me a 25 pound block of chocolate and a salt lick and I'll be your best friend! {redblob}

I seem to notice that at this phase I am in I am also doing the salt craving thing. It use to be just sweets but now I sit down with my pringles in my left hand and my chewy Sprees in my right hand.
Since I worked in the medical field I have had the opportunity to talk with several men who had either high/low Testosterone or high/low Estrogen. It's amazing the Testosterone seems to affect high or low libido, but the estrogen really messed with their moods.
Too bad they can't seem to come up with something for us women the way they found Viagra for men. I mean we go through our whole lifes with this 2 week period every month pretty much shot, then comes menopause which sounds like it's not much better. Then after all that we start having our bones break, hump in our back etc. Wow the joys of being a women all this and labor too.

Salt cravings!
Mood swings, headaches and let's not forget the 8 lb. water gain!
AAAAAAHHH!!

Ah yes the weight gain. How could I forget that one. I have two sets of most clothes. One for I wear 3 weeks of the month and the other I wear the 1 yuck week.
I also have to take my rings off during that time and the rest of the month my rings are slipping off my hand.

You know, I didn't realize any one else had the salt cravings. I've heard other women talk about craving sweets... but I'm with Kezzer and have actually had the exact same thought - just give me a salt lick! Put me out of the craving misery. Yup could just sit here with a big ol block of salt and be content some days! It's a rotten craving you know? The more salt you eat, the worse the water retention is... Arrggh! There's no winning!!

UGh!! Isn't it horrible! And of course then you get all depressed when your jeans are tight and then you get even more moody and even more emotional until you just flat out start crying and eating some more chocolate and salt.

Oh the PMS thing is awful!!! I get so touchy and sensitive...someone can say the slightest thing, or make a joke, and I take it so serious....I will go home and bawl..."They think I'm fat!!!" or "They were making fun of my hair!!" Stupid things, but I get so sensitive, and my feelings get hurt so easily...also I get very irritated with people....good thing it only happens once a month!!

Argh!! Gimme chocolate, gimme salt!!! I have been in such a bad mood lately, partly due to work partly do to pms. But if it weren't for pms I wouldn't be in such a bad mood over work. I told off a manager tonight without even realizing I was doing it. Then he told me I could leave if I wanted to and me being the smart you know what that I am jokingly said " can I really, OK!!" Woah!! Talk about dirty looks and grumbling when he walked away!! I should be thankful I guess that I didn't get written up!

So, I'm just curious... are there women going through pre-menopause? My gyne thinks I am. Things are really irregular and it's driving me nuts having "visits" 3 times in a five week time frame. (Gads, {blush} hope the guys don't read this area of the forum). Tried the birth control pills, but they have made me so sick. On the 3rd variation of the Rx now, and it's a little better but still have times when I just can't take the pill cause I'm sick to death of feeling nauseous all day long. Plus, the risk of stroke is freaking me out!! If you know of any helpful tips please pass them along. Anything!! It's crazy having PMS this often! {toothy}

I'm with you. I had a blood test taken that shows I'm in peri-menapause. YUCK.... This month it was only 3 weeks. I was hoping that as I got close to this they would slow down and come less often but, seems mine are doing the reverse. Go figure. I have had my tubes tied and refuse at my age to get back on birth control pills. But these mood swings are killers. I just thought PMS was bad coupled with those hot flashes. Yikes and they say this can go on for 10 years.
Now wasn't it Eve I wanted to ask that question to?
And remind me again what exactly is it that the guys go through? It wasn't childbirth, it wasn't labor, it's not monthly periods, it's not menapause....hmmm and who do they call the weaker sex? Go figure that also.

Hi, I'm new here, but I thought I'd bust in anyway.
I think guys go through mid-life crisis. I have no idea WHY, though, compared to us women. Maybe it's because their lives are SO boring and dull and the same every week of the year that they go bonkers when they hit 40 or so.... ;)
The nice thing about the pill is that as soon as I hit the little GREEN pill week, I know to warn everyone to steer clear. Then the pink ones kick back in and I'm fine. :) Nice to have your emotional life color-coded like that.
Fun group! Nice to be here. :)

Another thing I hate about PMS is the bloating...eeeeeechhh. As If I don't feel bad enough.
And it always happens when I'm going to be dressing up and going somewhere...like the work christmas party so they can all see what a cow I am...lol.
blinc
12-06-2000, 12:49 PM
Gosh Debby I know exactly what you mean! No kidding, it's easy for me to put on 8lbs. or more from bloating. Because of it, I also have two "sets" of clothes. It's irritating as heck isn't it? My wedding ring gets so tight sometimes, I keep checking to make sure the circulation doesn't get cut off... does that happen to you too?
Karenluvs6
12-06-2000, 02:28 PM
that happens to me every month!
I hate it....I too, have two sets of clothes.
I can't wear any kind of jeans during that time...I have all 'pms sweats'....wear them all the time.
Do you get the irritation stuff going on....? Like when every single thing gets on your nerves. I will be vacuumming and I'll bang the vacuum on the desk...I'll get real mad and stop, just stand there and roll my eyes....count to ten.....OMG...I get weird!
Or I'll drop my papers off the desk...pick em all in a huff....then drop them again...I'll be picking them up and throwing them all over.
It seems like every little tiny thing annoys me.
Debby
12-06-2000, 09:17 PM
Oh Yes, Blinc....my wedding ring gets so tight I can't get it off....and my ankles even swell up! I hate it!!! I feel like such a cow during that time...and when I go out in public, i feel even worse, I can't very well wear a sign that says..."Hey I may look like Ive gained alot of weight, but I'm really only bloated!!"
And Karen, boy DO I get irritated over the dumbest things. And my feelings get hurt so easily during that time. One time I couldn't find a paper for work, and one of my bosses said, well maybe she ate it...just joking, since I couldnt find it....but I spent the next 15 minutes in the bathroom crying, convinced that he only said it because he thought I was a fat cow that ate everything in sight! The poor guy had no clue he had even hurt my feelings, and I know now he didn't mean it that way at all....funny what PMS does to our brains and thought process...
I always go up to my husband and say things like..."Do you really still love me? and Are you sure you don't think Im fat...etc...
Karenluvs6
12-07-2000, 07:13 AM
me too me too!
I get strange like that too...it's so weird.
One day, I was walking around crying all day...I was watching the soaps and crying that they had a better house and stuff than me......Oh boy! What a nut! And during this time, I always ask hubby, like every 20-30 minutes, "are you mad at me?"
eventually he's like, "I'm getting there....yeah."
Debby
12-07-2000, 07:45 PM
Oh Karen,I do the same thing!! I will go up to my husband and say...Your mad at me aren't you......no......yes you are, I can tell.....no, I'm not.... but whhhhhhhyyyyyyy are you mad at me? LOL I hate PMS!!!

I'm just glad mine seems to have gotten better sicne I had my little boy. Hardly any cramps, and lasts just a few days - but the PMS is still there. Oh yeah!
Just thought I'd fill in my part of the survey :D
Migraines - that's my PMS nightmare. It started 4 years ago, about the time I went on the pill. Now I'm off the pill for 10 months but I still get the migraines...
The first time I had one I didn't know what it was. The most horrible headache + being sick. I thought I was having TSS from the tampons :D Almost made Alpha take me to the hospital...
I also have chocolate cravings, but - here's the catch - chocolate seems to induce migraines so I can't have any that time of the month. It's a cruel cruel world 8(

Anat, I really feel for you, migraines are horrendous! Do you have any medication you can take to help with the pain? There is new medicines out that can really help, if you take them at the first sign of a migraine... helps to keep them from getting real bad. Do you have vision problems before the headaches hit? Do you see any zig zaggy lights or maybe dark spots? Any loss of vision?

What about acne? Does anyone still get zits? I do and it bugs me to know end. I figured that at least having kids would put me in the clear, ya know, thinking that maybe, just maybe my body had matured. Nope! So then I thought once I hit 20, you know, I'm no longer a teenager, Nope! I haven't had any real bad breakouts, thankfully, but enough is enough! I just want a clear complexion the whole month for once! And what's even funnier, if I do the good girl bit and not eat the wonderful things I crave such as salt, chocolate and drink lots of water, I break out twice as bad than if I splurged. Weird!

Kezzer- you're not alone! I still get them!! WHAT A PAIN!!! Sometimes I wake up and I have a mean one...where or when I really don't need it...and then all day you think that everyone is looking at it!! It's annoying as can be!!!

That's the problem with me too. Noxema used to work like a charm then I tried this cucumber mask, then this sea goo mask and then Clean& Clear and oxy and stridex. You name it I've probably used it at one point or another. I hardly even bother any more. Just plain ol' soap and water since the others barely do anything for me anymore. What a pain!
Swimmers
01-06-2001, 01:25 AM
It is a pain! My body has become immune to everything that I use. It works for awhile and then conks out on me. I've stuck to soap and water too. I figured, if you can't beat it...and least clean it! :D
Thanks for the kind words blinc. The migraines are terrible when they hit you. I kinow what you mean about those pills. I have them and I try to take them when I feel a migraine coming. Problem is I don't have any flashing lights or anything so sometimes it's hard to tell whether this is a growing migraine or "just a headache". As I don't like to take this stuff unecessarily (it's pretty strong and makes me sleepy the next day), I sometimes end up with a migraine after all...
I wonder what will happen when I get pregnant - they say pregnancy can make them better or worse.
blinc
01-06-2001, 08:04 AM
Acne, ouch! I didn't have it bad as a teen, it hit me when I was in my early 20's. Horribly! I went to a dermatologist and he put me on Accutane and a Retin A cream. Kezzer, maybe since yours isn't bad all the time, your doc could give you a Rx for just the cream? Tell you what, between the two things, I was cleared up within a few months and I had it really bad. Thank goodness it didn't leave scarring, but wish I had went to the dermatologist first thing instead of waiting for so long. (Because I didn't know there was anything they could really do).
Don't know if I'll explain this right... but that dermatologist told me that chocolate doesn't break you out. That a pimple takes a couple weeks to form before you notice it. Clogged pore, infection, yada yada. But if you were to break out from chocolate, it would be more of an allergic reaction, it would happen within 24 hours and it wouldn't look like pimples. Ok, he's the only doc I've been to that told me that. I'm assuming he knew what he was talking about. ;)
Anat... dang, that's really tough! Because if you were having vision problems beforehand, at least it would give you enough of a warning to know to take a preventative medicine. Not knowing for sure if it's going to be a migraine probably means you don't know (until it's too late) if you can take something to stop the majority of the pain. Do you go into a quiet, dark room? If you stay away from noise and light that will help some. Do you get sick to your stomach? How long do they last? How often do you get them? How long have you been having them?
Don't want you to think I'm being just casually nosey over here... I've had them since I was 17, went through a really rough time with them. Thankfully they've backed waaay off the last several years, to only a few a year now. My mother had them really bad too. If your mother had them there's a good chance it's a hereditary thing. I think (but not absolutely sure on the %) about 60% of women who's mothers had migraines will also develop migraines. Rotten luck that.
I'm by no means up on the latest treatments... because mine have backed off so much, that I really haven't kept up on the latest developments over the last couple years. I'm just hoping you find some relief from them. They are awful things and people who've never had them can't imagine the pain they cause. When Bill asked me what they felt like, I told him it feels like I've got an axe stuck in the side of my head! I was dead serious... cause that's what it felt like! Do you get the typical just on one side at a time migraine? I mean, when they happen, usually the pain is only on one side of my head... but next time it could be the other side. Ack! I'll shut up now. Just letting you know you've got my total sympathy over here. I really, really dreaded those things.
Austruck

I've had migraines off and on. Some of the stuff I've heard is to seriously AVOID caffeine, which makes the migraine worse. In fact, the over-the-counter migraine meds they have now (Excedrin Migraine, etc.) are mostly souped-up pain relievers minus the caffeine that's in most other regular pain relievers.
Also, I've heard too from various sources that chocolate doesn't cause break-outs. Ironically, neither does eating greasy foods such as potato chips. They're starting to wonder if most break-outs are just hormonal and almost entirely unaffected by diet. (This would explain why teens with raging hormones are most affected, and why women in various stages of their cycles are affected, as hormones ebb and flow.)

Blinc- I too heard that chocolate doesn't break you out. My mom use to harp at my sister about that...and then one day they said that chocolate has nothing to do with it at all! That's actually a good thing for chocolate lovers. I hear the chocolate is also the BEST mood enhancer!

I was always afraid of trying it. It sounds like a real good idea in theory, I was always forgeting to take the pill on time when I was on it, but because of the drastic side effects I got from the pill, I was afraid of them with the shot. At least once you don't take the pill all side effects are gone, but with the shot, you can't just stop it until that time period is over.

Okay you men who sneak in here and read can just see yourselves out before you read any farther. Thank you.
I went to the doctor today. She said it could take 18 months to get regular again. I told her we were kinda trying for a baby and that I did tests every once in a while just to check (since I'm not cycling you know). I guess I'll wait a few more months to see if anything gets going again. Then I was telling myself I could make it that long... positive self talk you know. ;) Then during my exam she says, "How long has it been since you did a pregnancy test?" I wasn't sure. ?? She says, "Your uterus is enlarged. We can do a test here if you want." I just about choked!! I did the cup thing and then waited. I think that may have been one of the longest 10 minute spans of time in my life! Looks like they would have come right back and told me; it just takes a minute! Well the test was negative. :( That's ok though. My hubby really needs to change jobs and get insurance straightened out before we get pregnant. It was an interesting few moments though!
Austruck
01-09-2001, 06:20 PM
That's quite a story, PsalmReader.
If it'd been me, my doctor probably woulda come back and said, "Your uterus is fat. Let's see what's up." You know it's time for a diet when even your uterus is fat!
If you're anything like me, though, even if you're sure it'd be better to wait and plan for a baby later, those few moments when it MIGHT be true and you MIGHT be pregnant are oddly exhilarating. Weird creatures, ain't we? :)

I did the Depo shot too. I gain all kinds of weight and I was not happy. when I got off the shot it took a while, but I was able to lose most of it. I wouldnt suggest it to any one.
I have had the worst PMS all my life. I actually missed school because of the intense cramps I would get. Then one day I was walking back from taking my daughter to school, and I had the most intense pain EVER! I doubled over and couldnt even walk the rest of the way home. My son was a baby then and I just had him sit down. I sat on some ones side walk for 20 minutes untill it eased enough up to get home. Then I went through a whol box of tampons in less than 1 day. It scared me!! So I went to the doctor. He thought I might have endometriosis. He put me on hormone therepy, which I dont do well on thats why i tried the Depoand it was not much better. one day a girl from my church stood up and gave a testimony about her having a similar problem and the Lord healing her. I decided that He's my God too. So I prayed one day while I was in the bathroom, and my cramps have never been the same! I mean my whole life it has been pain and heavybleeding. Now I have normal periods and I can say I believe in the power of God!
Sorry this is sooo long. I just felt I should share. Blessings!

Kezzer - I'm so happy for you!!!
We're also trying for a baby. I've been on the pill for four years and I stopped 10 months ago. We've been tryong to make a baby ever since.
I actually started doing tests a couple of months ago. So far all the tests are fine, so the doctor says just to keep trying.
We really want to start a family now! I just know that he'll be such a wonderful dad and we have such a wonderful relationship. I can't wait to go through child bearing and child raising together!
Any tips from you mothers out there? How did you do it (we know the basic technicalities - no need to specify there ;))_

We've never had a problem conceiving, I really wish that I could bottle my fertility and give it to those who have a hard time at it. I have no secret tips, It just sort of happened for us. My only suggestion is to keep trying!Don't get discouraged. I've heard that after the pill it sometimes takes up to a year or so to get your body and your cycle back on track. You sound like you guys will make a great mommy and daddy! Good luck! Hey , who knows, maybe it'll happen real soon and we can be preggers together!

We don't even want to have any more children, and we practice all the time. ;)
How else are we gonna get good at it?
Thanks for the advice - I'm going to try in tonight (that's in half an hour over here :))
Kezzer, I do wish it would be soon! Wouldn't it be nice to be able to open pregnancies threads :D

isnt' it wonderful?
I didn't even know about it until last week.
I love the idea of it.
In case I missed it somewhere....which are you hoping for, a boy or a girl?
or just a healthy baby?

Since I have one of each already, I'm just hoping for a healthybaby. And I stress baby, because knowing my weird luck I'll have a panda or something! I really can't decide though, I kinda think it's going to be a boy though. I'll have to wait a few months for my instincts to really kick in though before I give a good guess.

It always boosts my spirits to hear that someone is expecting and more importantly, wanting a new baby!!
In browsing through some of the threads I came across this one...I'm what you call peri-menopausal, have been for several years now. The hot flashes aren't too bad yet, and I've notice my periods are becoming shorter and lighter, with less cramping. My mother had a hysterectomy when she was in her thirties, and my grandmothers are no longer living, so I have no one to compare complaints with. My two sisters haven't mentioned any symptoms yet. But from what I've read, what I'm going through is very normal.

speaking of periods, I'm on mine and everytime it's weird..it only lasts on avg. 2-3 days..and everyday is heavy. Then it "shuts up" like a faucet, It's soo odd...I have no cramps, headaches, or cravings..nothing...although, I've only had it for about two ½ years, by now it should be regualated. I normally skip every month too...i'm not sure if it's a normal thing either. Any one have any ideas or experience in this same situation?

I had a friend like that. Boy, was I jealous! Everyone's body is different. When I first started mine I was like clockwork. Then after having my son, everything went downhill. I had a different length cycle just about every month. That's one reason why I was so surprised I got pregnant so fast. I'd talk to your dr., maybe they'll put you on something to help out, make it a bit longer and a bit less heavy.

You're right about everyone being jealous over it...they are constantly on theirs and then there's me...the straggler..I plan on going to the doctor..I doubt it's anything though...

I had a problem llike that when I was in my teens. I can't remember what it was the doc put me on... it may have been birth control pills, but whatever he put me on had me straightend out in about 6 months and then it was regular as clock-work for about 20 years. Hope you get straightend out.. or maybe not, sounds like you've got it made right now!! :)

Yeah, it probably would be better to be regular... if for health checks if nothing else. To know when you did go irregular, ya know? Still.... every other months sounds so nice about now!! *grin*
I know the Giants stunk didn't they? Ouch! It was painful to watch that game!!

Ha! I totally understand Spider! I go into the "nothing is clean enough and everything irritates me" mode about 10 days (give or take a few) before my period.
Noone can stand to be around me... {toothy}
