What's your opinion?
Mine is AMD all the way. It used to be that I was an AMD supporter just simply to root for the underdog, now AMD has the performance advantage. Intel has made some serious blunders in the past couple years that have cost it some major market share to AMD not to mention the performance crown. If you are a diehard Intel fan still (hard to believe), I would love to hear your comments.

Hi,

Sorry, no Intel supporter here AMD All the way. I think the only Intel I've owned was a 486.

I guess the diehard Intel PPL must like paying more for less

Later,

Jason

I'm going with Intel, not because I have any real experience with AMD, but because they are always so shaky financially. I think they are even based here where I work in Richardson, Texas.

That is a subject brought up a lot. AMD hasn't been around as long as Intel and doesn't have near the capital that Intel has amassed.
I know that AMD is based out of Texas so it very well could be Richardson. They have another Fab site in Dresden Germany.
There is a rumor floating around that since Intel can't compete with AMD (indeed they are nearly 6 months behind) they are going to fight a price war with them. Intel has deep pockets and could withstand a prolonged price war with AMD. Still AMD has had record earnings and growth this year. Also AMD's design team is considered to be the world's most innovative right now, supposedly they have far oustripped Intel in the number of patents filed...
Personally I think that Intel wants out of the PC processor business, to focus more on the networking side of things.
Intel has lost some serious ground and upset most of the tech industry with their blunders this year... I.E. The i820 chipset recall, the MTH (memory translator hub) issue, and the worst fiasco of all having to recall their 1.13ghz processor due to stability issues... Its been a very rough year for them indeed.

I dont know, I think they will stay in it for awile. After all, they are still in bed with Microsoft. Intel may decide to get out of the PC side and go into more of a premier business use, by building multiple processor machines for servers running the new 64bit software on 64bit hardware. They wouldn't be competing directly with AMD in that fashion and they have their Identity well established. It would be very similar to Cisco vs Juniper. The primary markets that Cisco competes in are personal to small business where Junipers main market share is large corporations.

Does it make much difference, unless you are using your PC for a specific thing - professional games creation, or CAD, or something?

If you're a SOHO user, just doing a bit of WP and dtp, maintaining a small web site, general things, does AMD or Intel make much difference?

I don't think it makes much of a difference either way. They are compatible.

AMD releases it's Duron! It has been out for awhile, but I've just now thought of posting something.
Ok the Duron is just an Athlon without and on-board memory if I'm not mistaken. It is very over-clockable and can reach high speeds for low cost. It is easily the best "performance for your dollar" processor out there.

Here is a little on it:

It looks like AMD is on top now. They have a 64-bit Athlon.
