" Smarty Jones lost his Triple Crown bid and his perfect record when Birdstone upset the popular 3-year-old in Saturday's Belmont Stakes and toppled his chances to end a record 26-year drought without a winner of thoroughbred racing's most coveted prize. Smarty Jones is the third straight Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner to fall short in the 1 ½ -mile Belmont. "

I didn't get to watch it, but I listened to the streaming audio. I really thought that he was going to win. I think everyone was really pulling for the feel good, underdog, out of nowhere, hero sensation story out of all of this. I was kind of sad he didn't win either. We have countless heroes abroad and at home who are engaged in fighting for our country, but I think everyone was looking for another one that let them take their minds off the rest of that stuff for now. A new legend if you will. But alas, those hopes have been taken away. It's a strong dose of reality though.

Uffda, that was really disappointing. He was so close! I thought for sure he had it, and then birdstone came out of nowhere on the outside and just barely nipped him. Aagh!

It made it exciting, that's for sure. It's hard to win the Triple Crown.

Can you imagine how awful they feel to get that close and lose right at the last minute?

It's sad, just knowing the story behind that horse. It felt almost sacrilege to root for anyone but him.

On another forum, we chose the horses that we figured would win the Kentucky Derby. I chose Birdstone. As much as I wanted Smarty Jones to win the last race, I had a little secret desire for Birdstone to win! How insane is that!! LOL!!!

We should have done that here.

Holy cow, dogs.. he will be a winner forever.. CuriousG, do you want to share a lottery ticket with me?

You'd probably be lessening your chances at the lottery with me involved. I never win anything. I'm serious too. When I was just a kid, I can remember we used to have roller skating parties for all of the elementary schools. There used to be a coloring contest in which they randomly selected one entry from each school to win a hot dog and soda. I went to a very small school and sometimes there would be as few as 2 of us there. I STILL never won. I can't even win a hot dog!! If it is a game of chance or random winners are picked, etc. Don't count on me to even come close to winning.
