To which search engines and directories should you submit your website?

Open Directory Project (http://www.dmoz.org/) is used by AOL Search, AltaVista, Direct Hit, HotBot, Google, Lycos, and Netscape Search. If you get a listing on the ODP, eventually every major search engine will find you.
Google.com (http://www.google.com/addurl.html) is the best search engine out there, and it is used by Yahoo.
Canada.com (http://www.canada.com) will get you into Inktomi's database which is used by AOL, HotBot, MSN, and NBC Snap.
Anzwers.com (http://www.anzwers.com) will also get you into Inktomi's database. Submit to both Canada.com and Anzwers.com.
AltaVista.com (http://www.altavista.com) is a popular search engine.
All the Web (http://www.ussc.alltheweb.com/) is used by Lycos Search, Looksmart, and allthesites.com.
Yahoo! (http://www.yahoo.com) is the most popular portal in the world.

What are some others?

Here is something I don't recommend: using those services that promise to submit your site to over 250 search engines and directories, especially the free ones. It is much better to learn how to do it yourself and do it right.

SE placement services are fine, just make sure you pick one that helps you get your meta tags right and then submits to the right places. If you want someone to do the work for you, check out Web Positioning Services (http://www.position-pro.com/). He provides many different affordable services.

If you want to learn more about SE placement, check out SE Submission at JamesGLewis.com (http://jamesglewis.com/sesubmission.htm). It gives more details than I did above, and it also tells you about other sites that discuss search engines.
