I'm blinc, as you've probably already deduced! I'm from N. Carolina, USA, but originally from Michigan. I love it down here! It's warm, green and beautiful. The Atlantic Ocean is something I've fell totally in love with. I'm married to a wonderful guy. We do private animal rescue and currently have 9 dogs and 4 cats. Yes, it's a houseful but we love them all. :) I'm also a member of an Animal Rescue group that goes into disaster areas to provide care for animals.

Just wanted to say hello! {wavey}

That's pretty cool. It's amazing how some people treat animals. Did you see that article about cruelty to pets being a forewarning of physical abuse in the family? Yikes! Makes sense.

I also can't believe people who go out and get rottweilers and other such dogs as pets. I have a tiny 2.5 year old daughter that weighed 2.5 pounds when she was born. She is just the most precious little kid with these skinny little arms and legs. There is a rott at the end of our street, and it just scares the fool out of me. I can't imagine what it would do to my child if it ever got loose.

Somehow, we've got to find a balance.

Thank you for the welcome! :)

Yes, I've also read about their being a correlation between animal abuse in young children and later violent behavior being displayed. It's been found that many serial killers had a history of abusing/torturing animals as young children. Scarey world we live in sometimes.

Nice to meet you, Blinc! Bryan and I live in the country (Lindale has a whopping population of about 2500, and we live in rural Lindale) where it seems there are stray animals everywhere. Sometimes it's hard to know what to do with all of the animals that wander up to our doorstep. So far, we have stuck with adopting from our local vet. That way, we at least know the animal is disease-free!

We are animal lovers, though. (Bryan works with horses for a living). I think animal-rescue would be a really neat pursuit. Sounds exciting!

Bryan and I were just discussing this "rottweiler" issue last night.

This past week, there was a 5-year-old Tyler girl mauled to death by a family dog. I can't recall if it was a rottweiler or pit bull, but know that it was one or the other. Amazing and terrible. I think I'll stick with golden retrievers. . .

Have you ever found yourself in danger, Blinc, in the midst of doing your job? How do you handle it? Surely some of these animals are not-so-friendly, especially when encountering a stranger.

Almost all of the private rescues have been from animals being dumped off out here in the country. Like what you've encountered, I'm sure. People just seem to think it's ok to dump off a cat w/kittens, puppies, old dogs, whatever they don't want in the country. Grrr... Thankfully, we've found homes for almost all of the healthy ones. The last dog addition was an old hunting dog someone dropped off. The vet figured him to be about 8 or 9 years old, he had heartworms and was starved. We could actually count every vertebra along his spine and every rib. Well, we got him fattend up, then treated for the heartworms. He cracks us up because he's turned into the dog from the Beverly Hillbillies on us. Lazy and kind of chubby. We kept him just because he had been through enough stress physically, without putting him through anymore by placing him elsewhere. He had a hurt bottom lip, that hangs down in a pucker now, he's a hound dog... so naturally we named him "Elvis".

The animal rescue group I belong to is called UAN/EARS. I belong to the EARS "portion". I just joined last year and the floods here in N. Carolina from Hurricane Floyd was my first disaster area. Yikes! It was pretty rough seeing some of the hurt and dead animals, but the one's that are rescued really help ease that pain. Surprisingly, no one has ever been attacked in the EARS history. It seems the animals know that sometimes you mean the difference between life and death for them. They are almost always ecstatic to see someone or to be shown some attention. Almost always, they've been a day or two or more, without food and water. Even after they are fed and watered and the vets have taken care of them, they have been extremely friendly. There's a lot of heartwarming tales I could tell you about Greenville, N.C. and the rescues there, but I'm going on now for awhile! I love it. :)
