View Full Version : Smilie Hot Linking

I'm not upset, but I just want to give you guys some perspective on linking to smilies on other sites.

As the owner of a site with smilies, mine are all protected on the server from hot-linking because every time another site links to one of my graphics, it costs me server bandwidth. Server bandwidth = money. Since I pay for FrappyDoo with my own money, I like to preserve bandwidth. Most forum or site administrators don't like it when you hot link their graphics. It would be better if you didn't. I've never really made a rule about it, but it has never been as rampant as it is right now.

All of the off-site smilies that you hot-link to in your posts are fun, but eventually they will no longer work. They will get deleted off the other servers where you found them or the other sites will close or change their layout so that the links don't work. When that happens, FrappyDoo will be full of little boxes with red X's in the middle of them. It might be better if you stick to using smilies from FrappyDoo and request new ones (http://frappydoo.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3027) when you want them. Right now our list is at over 200 smilies, so it is not like we don't offer a good selection. I'm pretty responsive to requests for new ones.

Thanx for the Info, Jim!

The site I get mine from does allow hotlinking, I made sure I checked.

Boo Hiss. Another admin whining about bandwidth. {thbthb}

Just kidding. ;)

I kinda like the smilies. Please keep adding them.

You do have a great selection, Jim and we appreciate it! Is it okay if we use the ones from Frappydoo in some of our emails we send out? Or is that not a good idea? Thanks for all you do to keep this site up and running, it sure has been fun for me!

I don't think they will work. In his post, he says he has hot-linking disabled on the server. Try sending an email to yourself and see what happens. You'll probably get those x's he's talking about.

You can always save the smileys to your hard-drive and use them ... I don't think Jim would mind ;)

Thank's for the info. I don't know how to do what you are talking about anyway. (beyond my techno capabilities) I am quite happy with your selection (keep em coming) now that I know how to use them. One question. Can I insert stuff I have on my own hard drive. and if so how?

You can also go join one of those online places that store files for you. Uplink from there if they have that option for you.

You can add an attachment from your hard disk. It actually uploads it to the forum server. I don't know about FrappyDoo, but some boards restrict the number of attachments you can have. Some restrict it based upon count, others size. I don't know if there are any restrictions here.

To add an attachment from you hard disk, click on the Reply button. Then on the reply screen, click on the "Manage Attachments" button. You browse your hard disk for the attachment, then click upload. It won't show up in the preview part of you post for some reason.

You might want to check out Smiley Central (http://smileycentral.com/). You can use all their smileys on forums, e-mails and all the messengers ...

I went to the website and downloaded, but haven't been able to find it yet...I'm obviously not a computer guru, but I'll keep looking...
