View Full Version : Charter Members

I have decided to give the title "Charter Members" to the first XX number of members. What do you think the cut-off should be? 10, 20, 50? Or should it be a cut-off date, like 12/31/2000?

Please help me make the decision.

Also, if you have a better idea for the title than "Charter Member", let me know.

Right now, the titles are:
Charter Member (lifetime achievement)
Junior Member (0 posts)
Member (30 posts)
Senior Member (100 posts)

Many other sites use different titles. Do you have any suggestions?

My first thought was a low number, seeing as how this is a new forum and there are only a few of us so far. Upon further thought, looking to the time when hopefully there will be a couple thousand members, my personal opinion would be 100 members would be a good amount.
*scratches head*
Did that make sense?

I don't know, but it sure is great to be a charter member without ever having been a lowly newbie!

100 seems good--I think you'll have this many in no time.

I think I like 100 also, now that I've had some time to think about it. Ya'll keep telling me what you think though. I've got a while to get to 100, so I don't have to decide anytime soon.

BTW, I have to change you to "Charter Member" manually, so if you sign up and see "Junior Member," be patient. Next time I'm online, I'll fix it.

100 sounds good. Before you know it you'll have a bazillion members...well maybe not a bazillion...:D

100 sounds like the magic number.

blinc

Dang it, I deleted a previous post of mine... the thought was that maybe the first "whatever number" shouldn't automatically be made charter members?

I was thinking that since some people will sign on, look around maybe not make a post, or one post then never come back... why not make it so that the first people to reach say 25 posts become the charter members? It would give the people who come later a chance to become charter members. It would reward the people who actually do help to build this site - instead of the ones who just happend to log on and leave. Credit going where it's due type of thought I was having. :)

That's a cool idea, blinc. It is nice having members with experience in other forums. You bring a lot of experience to the table.

I think it's great to have different levels you can reach. And I agree it should be probably by number of post. This site is great and I bet you are going to be blown away by the speed in which it grows. If each new member passes along the word of this site to say 10 sites they frequent, wow in no time this place will be hopping.

It's a pleasure to discuss ideas with you guys! :) I too hope that things turn out well! I have a feeling this place will really take off, once people here that it's a decent place to post. :)

I'm going to go with the 25 posts to get charter member status. I was thinking about the fact that if we got 100 charter members, that's a minimum of 2,500 posts. Wow! That would be a lot of participation.

I'm trying to come up with some other titles such as:

Newbie
Junior Member
Member
Active Member
Overactive Member
Senior Member
???

Help!

Anat

I don't know if I would like being called a newbie... I think it might be better if everyone has the word "member" in their title - it would give a sense of belonging even to new members.

Also, how do you plan to differentiate between member and active member? Is there a way to control that in the Vbulletin settings?

I'm not sure if you should have more than 4-5 titles. IMO, it might confuse people to have too many.

Interesting decisions!

Anat

That was just brainstorming on the names, not actual choices. New Member might be better than Newbie. What does everybody else think?

Here is what another site uses:

New Member
Member
Lively Member
Addicted Member
Hyperactive Member
Fanatic Member

jamesglewisf

BTW, I implemented the new titles and the 25-post requirement for Charter Member. Some of you people with real lives got changed back. You'll have to ignore your friends and family and post more to get Charter Member status again.

Post Post Post, must get rid of new member status!!!

So, am I going to be a charter member forever? Just checking, cuz I'm not sure.

From now on, you can't lose charter member status unless you lose your membership completely.

I'm just barely beginning to get my feet wet here, but like the ideas that were shared in this thread. Personally, I don't find Newbie offensive, but I got a tickle and a giggle out of some of the others (Addicted Member, Hyperactive Member).

Cute stuff!

Hi
I notice most forums have some sort of member names depending on the number of posts - but many display the number of posts anyway. Is this just a "community feeling" type of thing, or is there a technical reason to do with the message board software?

jamesglewisf
11-05-2000, 02:28 PM
Can you re-phrase your question? I'm not clear on what you are asking.

dreuby
11-05-2000, 04:04 PM
I mean the "Member", "Junior Member" names. Is there a technical or admin reason for them, or is it just to make the boards more user-friendly or individual?

RoadRunner
11-06-2000, 10:16 AM
They do it to encourage member participation. People like to get "promoted," and the only way to get "promoted" is to post more.

Debby that created the funniest image in my mind. Could just see a little old lady sitting at her computer with a cane, whapping on it when it got out of hand... all grumpy like.

Charter Member (lifetime achievement)
Junior Member (0 posts) : totally meaningless. Alternative: non-posting member or observer
Member (30 posts)
Senior Member (100 posts)

I'd add zero to '30' and '100'.

If you make the minimums for each level so high, new members won't get much encouragement. 300 posts can sound like a lifetime if you are new. That would be 10 posts a day for a month before your first promotion. Right now we only have 8 people with more than 300 posts, and only two of them are not moderators.

That's why the changes happen pretty fast at the beginning. The minimum requirements grow exponentially, so it is harder to reach the top levels.
