View Full Version : Knowledge is Power
I thought it would be a good idea to broaden my general knowledge. So...basically you start off with asking a question about anything. If anyone knows the answer, or thinks they know the answer, they answer that particular question. If you answer a question you have to post a new one...
Here goes....
1) Why is the sky blue?
I know its a stupid question to start with but I suppose it's good enough to get the stoe rolling...{toothy}

Good idea!
Here is the answer: The light we have here on Earth comes from the Sun. Sunlight looks white, but is actually a mixture of all of the colors of the rainbow. When sunlight strikes air particles (which are very small), the light itself is scattered in all directions, forward, sideways, and backwards.
Air molecules scatter some colors of light better than others. Blue light is scattered the most and red light is scattered the least. In fact, blue light is scattered at least 10 times more than red light. Since the blue rays of lights are scattered th e most, they reach our eyes from all directions and we see more blue than any other color. This makes the sky look blue.
Here is my question....
If teflon is so darn NON STICK how do they get it to stick to the pan?? LOL Just kidding....
OK the real question: If you planted perenial plants in a climate that has no winter (snow etc) like southern Florida would the plants have a time of dormacy?? Or do they just stay alive forever??
{twitch} {eek2} {eektext}
Good question...I will have to think about that one...I'm at work now so have plenty of time to ponder about it...
Well...I've had some time to think about this one and this is what I think...
Plants sprout, grow and bear fruit according to the weather i.e. temperature, amount of sun light they recieve etc.
For example, peolpe who cultivate their own crops can make them bear fruit faster by making them recieve light for about 18 hours per day for the first 3 months...this is to make them grow faster than normal...the plant "thinks" it is summer so it grows faster.
After a while, the "farmer" will give the plant light for only, lets say for arguments sake, 10 hours a day. THe plant will now thionk that winter is coming and start to baer its flowers or fruit to get ready for pollination.
So maybe the perenial won't die because it will be tricked into thinking what time of the year it is........{twitch}
I know its a long shot but I tried....

Good question actually Grimey. (please change Grimey to Oncebyten, I had a lapse of memory)
Here you go! This is the link for your answer. I won't post it all because the page goes through the history of this polymer substance and how we have the better version today. Interesting reading.

I am going to leave a question since Bob didn't. I hope that is kosher.

Here's a question...why is it once we answer the previous question, we tend to forget to ask the next question....something to ponder...

Gosh I reckon it is because we are so darn proud of ourselves for even having an answer in the first place. You reckon?

.. or perhaps we're all goldfish, with a memory of only 5 seconds.
So how do you measure the memory of a goldfish?
Justawoman

I went and looked this up dreuby. I had no idea there was such a controversy about a goldfish's memory. One university site says they have a 3 second memory, another a 6 and then I found your 5 second one. I also found a site that said they believe they have a better memory than that. Their arguement being that a goldfish will come to the front of their bowl when it is feeding time or when their owner approaches. They also said a goldfish will hid when strangers enter the room.
I did find one statement that might answer your question. Goldfish memory is tested by giving them trap doors to open and manuever around to get to their food. So it is tested through a series of test to see if the goldfish can remember the sequence of opening doors to get to the food.
How do they figure out how many folks are watching a television show to rate that show?
Some told me that once...but I can't remember the exact answer. Basically, in a suburb there are a certain amount of specail devices (no idea what they are called, but I think 'device' should do..) put into house's when they are being built. The devices can tell what channel a TV is on. So if there are 100 of these things in a neighborhood and 20 houses are watching channel x and 80 are watching y then a basic average gets worked out....
I think it's a bit more involved but that is the just of it...
About 70 or so percent of an iceberg is under water. this means that a large amount of its volume is also under water right...logical. Scientists say that the ice caps melting and huge iceberg's melting is and will cause an increase in the average sea level. (Bare with me guys..) Water also expands when it freezes meaning that ice occupies a larger volume than water. So when an iceberg melts it looses volume and the water from the melting iceberg just "fills up" the spaces. (...............) So, how can melting icebergs etc cause the sea level to rise?
I hope you guys can understand what I mean...

They don't Bob. Icebergs are frozen chunks of sea water or ocean water. Now if glaciars break off and melt, which are frozen chunks of land mass, this might cause a slight significant rise in water levels. But what makes the ocean and sea level actually rise is the temp of the water itself. The warmer the water the more dense. Water is most dense at 4 degrees Celsius. Above and below this temperature, the density of water decreases (the same weight of water occupies a bigger space). So as the overall temperature of the water increases it naturally expands a little bit making the oceans rise.
How can a single number be meaningful enough to determine whether you can buy a house or car? Who or how did credit scoring get started?

Okay resurrecting this thread. While doing laundry today I noticed all of my hubbies t-shirts have little mini holes right around the belly button area. Anyone know why this happens? Is this where the lint comes from in our belly button?
{twitch} You have me there????

No one else has this problem? I think it is his big ole buckle rubbing small holes in his shirts. It only happens on his t-shirts. Craziest thing I ever saw. Kinda like the copenhagen ring in his backpocket. Yep I married a redneck.

Nope not this year. We actually had no moth invasion. Now last year I could have said yes. Maybe I need to stick a moth ball in his navel, you think? You know just make for sure and all.
