Question:

What is the proper tip for a car valet at a restaurant that has a valet parking service on busy nights? They charge $5 for the service. I figure the charge is to insure the attendent doesn't get stiffed. Same question for a hotel that charges a fee.

My answer:

The tip is the same regardless of how busy things are - $2-3. When it is busy, it just means they get more tips.

The $5 goes to the valet parking service company. It does not go to the valets. The same is true for a hotel. The hotels use valet or parking fees to raise the cost of your room without having to change the published rate.
