I have been to some chuches that do not believe that people can speak in tounges or unknown tounges. The Bible clearly says that Paul could, but can poeple today speak in tounges? Are people today speaking in tounges? Could someone prophesy today?

Corinthians 13:1 Though I speak with the tounges of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Corinthians 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tounges more than ye all:

Corinthians 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

The ability to speak in tounges is a gift of the Spirit, as is the ability to prophesy. As long as there is a person worthy of the Holy Ghost, and as long as God wills it, the gift of tounges will always be possible. It is a very sacred thing, however, and isn't used for show, or to prove something to others.

It is important to remember that "tounges" is another word for "languages".
When the apostles spoke in tounges on the day of Penticost, it was in the language of those who were from different nations. I don't believe it was in a language nobody could understand.

Take missionaries that go to foreign countries, for example. Many of them are able to learn complicated languages in amazingly short periods of time. There was an embassedor of Finland that once said, "There are only two kinds of people that can learn Finnish. Finnish babies and Mormon missionaries." I have no doubt that that's the gift of tounges in action.

What about the people that have rattlesnakes biting them? Is that real? I can't doubt that it's real since I've seen people do it. I do believe, though, that it has to do more with psychology than spirituality.

Studies have proven that a person with strong mental control (or mental persuasion) can convince themselves into being healed. It's the power of suggestion. So, in that sense, snake-handlers are demonstrating an abundance of faith, but I don't see how it helps them live more Christlike lives. Therefore, I don't consider it a divine manifestation, or any gift of the Spirit.

I hope that makes sense.

I'm not convinced that people can really speak in tongues today as biblically described. I don't think they can do the snake stuff either.

If people can convince themselves that rattlesnake poison can't kill them, why can't we also talk ourseves out of cancer? Or AIDS? Or..Mad cow disease? I DON"T GET IT!!!!!!!!!There's actually scientific evidence that shows they can. People have been given placebos, and were told that they were powerful cancer drugs. Those that believed it could heal them, were a lot more likely to actually recover, without any actual medication.
