I hadn't given this much thought until my spouse decided to hang out in the kitchen yesterday after work. He asked this one question, "do you know how WWI started?" There was 4 other people in the kitchen besides me. We all said, "that Archduke or prince was shot." None of us remembered the exact details. Do you?
On June 28 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_28), 1914 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1914), Gavrilo Princip (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavrilo_Princip) assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archduke_Franz_Ferdinand), the heir to the Austrian throne, in Sarajevo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarajevo). Princip was a member of Young Bosnia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Bosnia), a group whose aims included the unification of the South Slavs and independence from Austria (see also: the Black Hand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hand)). The assassination in Sarajevo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_in_Sarajevo) set into motion a series of fast-moving events (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I#July_crisis_and_declarations_of_war) that escalated into a full-scale war. However, the reasons behind the conflict are multiple and complex. Historians and political scientists have grappled with this question for nearly a century without reaching a consensus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I
And now the world is watching Isreal to see what happens to Gilad Shalit.
If Corporal Shalit is killed while in the hands of militants linked to Hamas, any prospect of a rapprochement between Israel and a Hamas-led Palestinian Government will vanish for years to come, perhaps for ever.
Israel will seek revenge against those it holds responsible — not only on the Hamas leadership in Gaza but also against the group’s more militant exiled leaders in Beirut and Damascus. But should Israel’s military pressure — or a deal to swap Palestinian prisoners for the soldier — persuade Hamas to release Corporal Shalit, surprising possibilities could open up.
The magnitude of the crisis is being felt at the highest levels. Corporal Shalit’s kidnapping was raised yesterday by the White House and European Union. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-2248285,00.html
If you listen to Michael Medved or any talk radio show host that deals with politics you get the sense everyone is expecting a new World War should the outcome be that Corporal Shalit is executed. Then there is North Korea and their missiles. They have Japan and China anxious.

So what is our world coming too? Anyone have any thoughts on the subject other than the doom and gloom we hear in the news?
