A friend of mine has a dilema. We frequent a local pub where the bartenders split all tips from tip jars. When a shift changes, the tip jars are emptied and split between all who worked during that shift. If credit card tabs are kept running after a shift changes, then the proper thing to do would be to the split the tip left on the tab between all who waited on the customer? correct? How exactly do bartenders handle this?

Here's the dilema: When my friend tabbed out, he specifically asked the current bartender to make sure that the previous bartender got her share of the tip ($20.00). When my friend asked her if she was given her share, she said no. Now my friend is upset and wanted to say something to the bartender that didn't split the tip. Apparently, this is not the first time it's happened. He was pretty upset. I told him he should speak to the owner and he did, but said he acted like he wasn't concerned.

What are some good suggestions to remedy this with out embarrassing anybody?

Pay your tab when the shift ends. I don't think you can ever count
on humans to do the right thing, not all of us anyway.

It goes both ways on shifts. Sometimes the friend benefits, sometimes the friend loses out. I wouldn't worry about it. Next time you want someone specific tipped, hand the tip to them in cash or pay your tab before the shift ends and start over. You need to leave this incident alone. There is no good way to fix it.

The issue is really between the two bartenders, not the patrons.

Thank you for your help. I have passed this on to my friend. Hopefully things will work out.
