What is the official policy on the FDMB concerning the discrepancy between nature with her two sexes and the occasional ambiguity of the English language? In other words, if the sex of the poster is unknown/unclear, should I:
1. type something like: “In her/his question, s/he says...”
2. or can I use my sex (M) and say: “In his question", assuming the the possible lady won’t be offended and might answer: “In her reply, Nudnik…”
3. or I can guess/goof and the other party won’t declare a war; after all, it’s just the Net; voluntereering sex in the "Profile" (pun unintended) is optional.

I think I know what you are asking.....{confused}
normally, when I am unsure of someone's sex.....which isn't really a problem in here....but anyway, that's beside the point...when I am unsure, I just type his/her, she/he, him/her...etc.

I don't know if there's a policy, but I thought I'd tell you that I'm a female. :) I wouldn't be offended if you guessed the wrong gender. I have had to read a few replies to form my "guesses" on some user names.

Well, we don't have an official policy on that one! :) I'd go with your choice (1) if you're unsure.

2) Sure you can state your own gender if you wish. In fact, if you'd like to start a thread in "Anything Goes" asking for the info., I'm sure the people who feel comfortable revealing their gender, will do so. It definitely is an option, the member can choose to post in there or not... some people prefer to remain anonymous and that's perfectly understandable.
3) I seriously doubt any of the members here would start a war, because of a minor incident like the wrong gender being posted. We're all pretty friendly and easygoing here, that's why we like it so much. (shameless plug) ;)

I'll tell you that I am female. And I wouldn't be too offended if you happened to call me male. On another board I used to go to everyone thought I was male at first.

Yes, I noticed that folks here are pretty easygoing. It definetely does not look threataning – I mean to call anyone with an inappropriate gender. It’s only a pronoun, after all. But I was in trouble before. Some people are so unbelievably sensitive…!

{toothy} Geesh Kezzer I can't even guess who would have mistaken your name for a male...*cough*

Nudnik, I can't imagine anyone getting upset about being called by the wrong gender... I've had it happen a couple times. It's so hard sometimes to guess, because so many of our names aren't typically gender specific. You won't get in trouble here for it. Unless of course, one were to do it repeatedly in an attempt to purposely upset another member. Still, *shakes head* just can't see that happening here, the people are too great! :)

Let's call jamesglewisf "his" and "he" so much that everyone starts believing she's really a guy. Actually, that would be mean. She would probably get her feelings hurt. We better stick to "her" and "she." ducks and runs
