If you are moving out of your apartment and care about your security deposit, take these steps:
Clean your apartment well. This includes the refrigerator, oven, stove, dishwasher, washer, dryer, floors, carpets, bathrooms, porch and walls. Don't leave any trash or stuff behind. It should be as empty as it was when you moved in.
If there are any broken appliances, do not wait until it is time to move out to get them fixed. Turn in a repair request in writing, and keep a copy for documentation.
If there are any holes in walls from where you hung pictures, buy some DAP and fill them in.
Don't turn your keys into the manager until you have personally had a walk-through with your manager. At that point, your manager should date and sign a piece of paper, even if it is handwritten on the spot, indicating that there are no problems which will result in the forfeiting of your deposit, in part or whole.
If there are still things that need to be fixed, tell the manager you will fix them. After you have fixed them, repeat step four. Do not give the manager the keys until everything is fixed and the paper described in step four is signed.
If you still are uncomfortable, take pictures that prove every room of your apartment is clean.
Before you move anything into your new apartment, take pictures of any problem spots. I would do a walkthrough with the manager, and the manager should date and sign a piece of paper indicating which problems already exist prior to you moving in. You'll want the note and the pictures when it is time to move out of this apartment. Common problem areas include carpet, kitchens and bathrooms.

A very good list!!

I can only add this: FIXING THINGS YOURSELF MAY BE IMPRESSIVE TO THE MANAGER ALSO!! (So they dont have to spend the $$$ to fix them)
