Tipping in expensive places
So I went to this club in Vegas and I got a table for me and my friends and ordered a bottle of Vodka (stoli vodka @ $30.00 at your local store).
So the waitress got us the bottle of vodka and a bucket of ice and came back 2 minutes latter with two pitchers of Orange Juice. She came back and checked on us 2 more times. We felt like the service was good, so I left the waitress a $60 tip So we leave, and the waitress follows us into the casino area and tells me that I was the cheapest customer she ever had, and she couldn't believe how cheap I was, and that she's trying to make a living, and it was a big embarrassing scene OK, so our bill was $900, and I didn't feel it was reasonable to leave our waitress $135 tip for two trips to the bar, and two check-ups. Also, the clubs in Vegas can't charge you $900 for the table, so they pretend you are paying $900 for the vodka. So in reality we were paying maybe $800 for the table and $100 for the vodka. Had this waitress served us the same vodka at your local tavern, the bill would have been $100 and she would have gotten a $20 tip, for the same amount of service. So do you guys think I should have left $135 tip? or was the $60 more than enough? |

I'm sorry to say that you should have tipped $135. You don't tip less because the place you went is expensive. It is assumed that if you can afford the expensive meal/drinks, then you can afford the appropriate tip.
She probably has to split her tip with the bartender and bus boys. Usually what happens is the bar reports 12% of the gross sales as income to the IRS. The staff that splits the tips gets their percentage of the tip reported to the IRS as income. When you don't tip appropriately, they still have to pay taxes as if you did. She was wrong to come out and say what she did. That is not appropriate.
