Hello, I am new at this posting stuff so give me a break if I do something wrong, but please let me know.
I am getting married soon and we just received the itemized contract for our wedding. There are a couple of areas where the gratuity is determined after tax, 1(Between ceremony and reception-photography time-Cheese Trays), 2 (Liquor and beer) and one area where it is determined pre-tax, 1 (Dinner-which will be buffet style). My question is which should it be? And should it be the same throughout the contract? Would really like to have a reference to go back to if any has one. Thank you. |

The "rule," if there is one, is that you tip based upon the pre-tax cost of the food, beverages, or services. Many people tip post-tax because they think it is easier. It should be consistent in the contract.
You can read my page on tippping at www.tipguide.org (search for "pre-tax") or http://www.tipguide.org/iPhone/pretaxorposttax.php.

But also know, when there is catering, a lot of times there will be "gratuity" added, but the people that it's for (bartenders, servers, etc) will never see it. Those people usually get a healthy wage, so the managers and whatnot feel justified with charging a "service fee", even though it's not really going to the servers.

Whats Next McDonalds and the Liguar store
I believe it should be included in the price and shown on the price list or not charged at all. I already pay the tip its in the drink price.. I normally pay $5 for a rum and coke "my norm drink". The mark up is really high their prob making about 4 something on that purchase.
So to all you people you say we should tip. I do normally, but have not wanted to anymore lately.. The bar i go to has a eletronic pooring system so the bartender has to serve the drink the same to everyone.. Whats next tipping at Mc Donalds - hey they do better service and quicker then the restraunts Or maybe the liguar store clerk as well.. Hey some of you might remember that we use to tip the gas attendant (states that dont have self-service). You ever purchased furniture, ever tip the man. Of course not his commission is included in the price same with car salesman. Know you can adjust the price by haggling. Which is fine as long as you are fare.. Most are not.. Simple thing is tipping is for the dogs, and I might stop doing it soon. Do you know how much you could save by not tipping. And the owner of the place dont care he's getting paid. Your service will still be the same.. And in places you cant tell dont go to.. |

If your bill was $21.25, you should have rounded it up to $25.00, no question. I tip bartenders just like I tip servers (15-30% depending on the check-size; the lower the check, the higher the percentage).
That bartender had to do a lot of unseen work to get that drink to you (i.e stock ice, maintain clean glassware, keep a clean counter, etc.) especially when it's a complex mixed drink. Sure, for a $2.00 coke, that only deserves a $0.25, but a $5-6 mixed drink deserves a cool $1.00 tip. A lot of the time, the drink prices are geared toward hinting at the tip amount. For example, a $4.25 beer deserves to be rounded to $5.00. Just say you got two beers for $9.50.... Would $10 be enough? $10 would be the minimum. Life for the bartender would be easier if you'd reach in for an add'l $1. |
