Title Company at Closing
I saw this had been asked at least once before, but it was a few years ago, and did not specify in what particular area of the country they were buying.
My question is this; it seems that it is customary to tip the title company agent at closing here in NY (metro/long island area). I have been told by both my lawyer, and buyers agent that I am expected to do so, anywhere from $150 to $200. Does anyone have anything they can add? Not to get into my whole situation, but purchasing this house has been one hassle after another, so tipping someone is the last thing on my mind... |

That's about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I can't speak for whether or not it is customary in NY, but I've never heard of it before.
Tipping is always at your discretion. If you don't think it is warranted (and I agree with you), then don't do it. Title companies can charge you whatever they want. I don't think it should be your responsibility to tip them. They are required by law to file the paperwork correctly. Any implication that they won't do it right without a tip should be illegal.
