Turn on the Internet Explorer Status Bar in XP

This one is for Windows XP users who miss the status bar on Internet Explorer. No matter how many times you turn it on, the status bar goes away when you have multiple instances of Internet Explorer running.
  1. Open one instance of Internet Explorer.
  2. Select View | Status Bar.
  3. While holding down the CTRL key, click the X box in the upper right hand corner to close Internet Explorer.
  4. Open My Computer.
  5. Select View | Status Bar.
  6. Select Tools | Folder Options.
  7. Choose the View tab.
  8. Click on the Apply to All Folders option, confirm your selection, and then close the dialog box.
  9. Close My Computer.

For command prompt users in Win2000 --

You can just type the full name of an image, document, spreadsheet, etc., and its default application will start up and display the file.

For some reason this doesn't work in XP. I don't know about classic NT.

For example:

c:\somewhere> puppy.jpg

The puppy picture will be displayed by whatever is the default program for JPEG image files.

Has anyone else noticed that IE6 often doesn't download the graphics? I often have to refresh a page two or three times before they show. It happens on Win98 and XP.

I don't have the IE6 but it is like Opera.
Opera does the same but you can tell him to download it everytime.

I've got it set to download - it's just that quite often it doesn't download some of the graphics on a page until I've refreshed a couple of times.

If your keyboard has a Windows key, here are some good keyboard shortcuts:
  • Windows-F1 - Display Windows Help
  • Windows-Tab - Switch among applications
  • Windows-M - Minimize all open apps and go to the desktop
  • Windows-R - Open the run dialog box
  • Windows-E - Starts Windows Explorer
  • Windows-F - Find a file
  • Windows-Break - Open the System Properties dialog box (windows is broken)

To bypass the Autorun feature, hold down the SHIFT key when you insert a CD.

Someone at MS has a sense of humour - but I can't imagine who!
