Potty training

Hello...
Can anyone tell me the best way to get a toddler to poop in the potty? My son is using the potty religiously to pee but refuses to poop in the pot. We are just getting started he's 22 months old and I'm not pushing him at all just letting it happen naturally for now. I just wondered if there was a good way to get him interested and take that first poop and not be afraid that he's doing something"bad". He sometimes sits and strains but won't "let it go" then as soon as he's off the potty he goes to the corner and fills his pants then wants me to change him.

It sounds like you have one of my kids.

I read somewhere that this is the one situation in child rearing (pun intended) where you should use bribery. Offer candy for every time he does it right. And withhold all candy on days he doesn't - unless he turns around later in the day and does it right.

Additionally, you can put up a little calendar in the bathroom and give him stars when he does it right.

On top of that, every time he does it right, call his grandparents or anyone he loves and praise him in his hearing.

You can also offer trips to the toy store.

This bribery won't have to last long. After about a week of success, you can stop the bribes, and he will keep doing it just for the praise.

We used all of the above, and it worked for our very anal retentive child (pun intended again).

Definitely try the bribing thing. It worked with my daughter.

I bought a potty chair about 2 months ago, it's more of a plaything, hasn't been used yet. He will sit on it but nothing happens when he does. I am not rushing him btw, he is just going to be 18 months, but I want to get him used to it so when the time comes hopefully he'll figure it out quicker.

Well...still no luck with the pooping.
He's doing wonderfully with the pee-pee's but still wants to do #2 in his pants. Time, patience and consistancy will get us there!I will continue to follow his lead on this one. (I know parents who spank their kids for this! Sheesh... they are just beginning... and their bodies are not mature enough to maintain controll all the time.)

Kezzer...even though your son is only 18 months, don't let people tell you your child is too young to start! I think as his mother you know how your child progresses. Introducing it is wonderful..so what if they play with the potty a little. Just remind them that it's not a toy and that it's for poops and pees and redirect them with something else. People tend to want to tell us that we are messing up by starting early...my child has done a lot of things early... why not potty training? Please don't miss understand me..I'm not bragging on my kid. It's just all kids progress differently and as parents we have to "feel" out our situations and go from what we know about our kids !!

I guess some find pooping scary, I don't understand this but someone once told me their toddler thought flushing their poop was like flushing them. lol kids are so cute!
Spanking for accidents is so not right. It's not like the child does it on purpose, it is an accident after all. I hate hearing when people do that.

Come to think of it, I know my oldest son was longer at pooping too, I can't quite remember how long it took.
