My roommates and I are throwing a cocktail party for 80-100 guests at our home...We'd like to have a bartender. Is is proper etiquette to tip the bartender at home parties? I think putting out a tip jar would be tacky....

Find out if a service charge is included in the price of the contract. If it isn't, I would tell them that you are going to tip at the end. I believe that if you throw a party with alcohol or food service that you should be responsible for the cost of the alcohol and food, plus the service. Don't make your guests pay anything. Tell the bartender to refuse tips because you are going to take care of it, and then make sure you take care of it properly. Be generous.
