I have a hard time calling those documentaries folks. But that is my humble opinion.

My favorite: The Civil War by Ken Burns. Very well done and researched.

I'm glad we changed from cable to Sky - lots more documentaries to choose from, and I need intelligent entertainment when I'm ironing. Lots more Christian channels too.

I haven't seen it, but I heard that the documentary on the Harlem Globetrotters was really interesting. Has anyone seen it?

7 outstanding documentaries

My Flesh and Blood
(2003) This documentary tracks a year in the life of Susan Tom, a courageous California woman who has adopted 11 "special needs" children, including a girl born without legs, a girl badly disfigured from burns, a boy afflicted with a deadly skin ailment and a troubled boy with cystic fibrosis. The film captures many happy times such as school dances and summer vacations, but also depicts heartbreaking events such as hospital visits and a death.

Tarnation
(2004) Filmmaker Jonathan Caouette's documentary (an admixture of snapshots, Super-8 footage, answering machine messages, video diaries, early short films and more) about growing up with his schizophrenic mother is culled from the 19 years of his life dealing with her illness. By turns, Caouette is ambivalent about his mother, expressing both love and pain and, bravely, the fact that there's more than one truth on view here.

Sister Helen
(2002) Winner of the Sundance Director's award, this docudrama centers on Sister Helen Travis, an unconventional nun determined to help substance abusers in the South Bronx. A recovering alcoholic, Travis turned to God after hitting rock bottom when her two children and husband died from substance abuse-related causes. The hard-nosed Sister runs a halfway house, dispensing her unique form of tough love in a tireless effort to help recovering addicts.

Touching the Void
(2003; docudrama) Mixing interviews with dramatic re-enactments of the event, this gripping story retells the mountaineering trek gone awry of Simon Yates (Nicholas Aaron) and Joe Simpson (Brendan Mackey). While climbing in the Andes, Simpson falls and breaks his leg. Yates, who's tethered to him, attempts to lower him to safety but fails. He makes a pivotal decision that may or may not save both of their lives. Was he right?

The Endurance
(2000; docudrama) In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set sail on the Expedition with 27 men aboard, aiming to cross Antarctica. But when the vessel became stranded in frigid, deep waters, the crew began a battle of the human spirit, testing the limits of endurance as they strove to overcome the debilitating setback. Miraculously, they succeeded, even capturing the experience in pictures and on film. The Endurance celebrates the survivors of this wayward adventure.

Born Into Brothels
(2004) This Oscar-winning documentary is a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in Calcutta's red-light district, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Spurred by the kids' fascination with her camera, Zana Briski, a photographer documenting life in the brothels, decides to teach them photography. As they begin to look at and record their world through new eyes, the kids awaken to their own talents and sense of worth.

Supersize Me
(2004) Two out of three Americans are overweight or obese, but where does personal responsibility end and corporate responsibility take over? On the heels of recent lawsuits against McDonald's, director Morgan Spurlock takes a hilarious and often terrifying look at the effects of fast food on the human body. Spurlock spends a month of eating nothing but McDonald's food, ordering everything on the menu at least once and "super-sizing" his order if asked.

Both of those films more fiction and half-truths, than they are "reality". You can look up websites and articles for both that list all of the fabrications.

For example, the famous scene in "Bowling for Columbine" in which Michael Moore receives a free gun in a bank, was completely staged and scripted. The reality was that the bank would mail the gun to the person weeks after they registered. He actually had to postpone the filming of that scene so that they could ship the gun. Most of the quotes, throughout the film, are completely chopped and taken out of context.

In "Farenheit 911", he quotes a congressman who said he wouldn't send his son to fight in Iraq. What he doesn't include is the fact that the son is two years old.

Both of those films are as close to reality as "The God Makers" is about Mormonism. (i.e. Far from it!)

I'm not a big documentary fan either, Grimey. Gimme a good comedy or action flick.
