Do you tip less for a large restaurant bill?

Question:
Quote:
I had a discussion with a friend about tipping at a restaraunt and she stated that the more the food bill was the less the percentage of tip should be given. ie 100.00 -20% $500.00 would be less.

I believe your friend is wrong. The restaurant is going to report to the IRS the total amount of the food bill for the waiter. If you tip less, they will be paying taxes on the full bill while you are in effect not tipping on the full bill. The tipping percentage is based upon the quality of service, not the dollar amount of the bill. 15-20% is standard.

No, not higher. I mean, if you have the cash, go for it, but 20% on a HUGE bill is definitely fine. I would say go higher if the server was REALLY going out of her/his way for you. But never ever go lower just because the bill is large.

I still believe that tips should be given willingly by the costumers. If they are not happy with the service or find the food not so good, why give a tip? But since that is how it really goes, I have to give not more than 15%.. just don't like the idea though...Paying for food alone is already costly.
